It is a beautiful place that is easy to get to by Kayak, except for the things one needs to bring along (sheets, food, water, clothing, etc.). A small boat comes in handy.

The cottage was the perfect place for an early summer vacation! We had help initially getting out to the island on a friend’s skiff but otherwise used a kayak/canoe to go back and forth from shore. Paddling to & from Broad Cove Marine took 10 mins or less. The cottage was comfortable and the kitchen was extremely well equipped for cooking! Almost the whole week we were on Oar Island ended up being foggy/cloudy/rainy, but we still spent a lot of time outdoors and on the spacious front porch. We especially loved the porch bench swing and watching terns and cormorants fishing right in front of the cottage. Enjoyed getting to walk the trail to the other end of the island daily and paddling around seeing bald eagles, seals, and ospreys, and got to paddle to Hog Island one day for hiking & picnic lunch. Appreciated the wood stove and board games for rainiest times! Larry was very responsive to one issue we discovered upon arriving and it was resolved quickly. Such a gem of a spot!

This is a great blend of 'close to land' but 'on an island' and will take you out of your normal grind as soon as you arrive. The 4 of us arrived in a canoe and kayak, just a 10-minute ride from the mainland, with no trouble because at low tide at the cottage you can just pull into the small beach. Another couple in our family rented the cabin and we loved having the island to ourselves and letting our dog just hang out freely the entire week. The island dock is positioned over near the cabin (another rental) and needing to take lots of trips through the wooded path would be a pain if you don't know those renters, so it's just good to know to avoid large heavy coolers and the leave behind the nice-to-have things you think you need but really don't. We went to shop mid-week and actually liked being able to get out and grab wonderful local food at markets and roadside stands, so don't feel like you need to plan food for the week like you're in the deep woods - the island is very accessible. Downtown Darimiscotta is really cute and they have a great food co-op, used bookstore and ice cream. We used the dock a few times at high tide if we came back with groceries mid-week and Larry had a sled and wheel cart if needed. Word to wise though, just pack light, honestly and you'll be glad you did. The shared garden had plenty of lettuce and herbs for us and since it was starting to rot in August, we had a salad every night with no guilt. Just lovely! Walking to the point every day and also walking the 6-mile loop on Hog Island (Audobon) is a must - you can easily kayak there. When we lost the sun in front of the cabin around 4PM, I walked up the path (behind the outhouse) that takes you to a rocky outcrop where, if you're at all nimble, you can chase the sun and it will happily shine on you until 7 or so for your cocktail time. We loved the front open porch with the swing and the little screened-in porch with the table for games and meals, and spent the majority of our time on one of these porches watching seals, boats, or reading. Verizon cell service was unexpectedly quite good and I even used it as a hotspot for working in a pinch. Though I didn't attempt zooming, it probably would have been possible with video off. The cottage and island are a slice of Maine that really should be experienced, as you instantly feel "away" and the beautiful location sets your body clock to the tides and the sun. We really enjoyed simple summer days and life as it should be! Thanks, Larry, for all the preparations.

What an incredible experience! Oar island and broad cove marina are one of Maine best kept secrets! The cottage offered a perfect getaway. It was clean and well stocked. The 16 ft skiff we rented worked great! Thanks for sharing this special spot!

Selfishly, I want to write “do not stay here” just to keep others away so I can ensure my next stay. Honestly though, this place is magic. It’s an older cottage with some newer updates. If you spent childhood in older summer homes on a lake, or in this case on the shore it’s very much like that. It’s not an open concept nor does it have the latest and greatest. What it does have is a small, comfortable space for the family to hang out in and a whole island of possibilities. Stunning views (if coastal Maine is your jam) including from the outhouse (which is optional.) our first lunch there, a bald eagle swooped by so very close that we were all startled. Then another bald eagle and another one after that. We had so much fun having “adventure walks” around the island everyday, jumping off the rocks into the water, exploring the tidal pools, and attempting to rake for a few shellfish (we failed, but had fun.) life slowed down and was extremely enjoyable - we rarely left, until we HAD TO. I’d say 10 out of 10.
