Kirkdale Cottage is set in open countryside just outside of the North York Moors National Park. A perfect base for exploring Yorkshire's two National Parks, York and Whitby. The cottage has far reaching views across the Howardian Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Kirkdale has countryside walks on the doorstep, and is under 2 miles to the picturesque market town of Helmsley. With a log burner, enclosed dog exercise paddock and historic features - Kirkdale is a hidden gem. Featuring exposed stone walls and wooden beams, the cottage offers a historic and relaxing setting for your holiday. Downstairs the cottage has a living room with exposed Yorkshire stone walls and original features from its earlier use as a farm building. The living room opens into the dining area (a table and six chairs) and kitchen. The living room (with sofa seating for 5 plus window seats) has a cosy log burner to relax in front of during colder spells. The kitchen includes a dishwasher, washing machine, microwave oven, toaster, kettle, full size fridge freezer, iron, hob and oven. The cottage is centrally heated; the bathroom has a shower cubicle (no bath); we offer free parking for guests. There are three bedrooms: bedroom 1 has a kingsize bed which can also be split into two single beds; bedroom 2 has a (fixed) double bed and bedroom 3 has a single bed. All bedrooms have wardrobes. The cottage looks out on to our grounds and the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Lovely cottage in peaceful surroundings. The rooms are comfortable and the main livng area is of a good size. We have a large dog (Vizsla) and there was plenty of space for his crate and the four of us downstairs. The area out the front is a bonus to walk/run the dog too. Easy parking too. The views are great and you're central for most of the area, 45 minutes to Whitby, York, Brimham rocks, Harrogate and so on. Helmsley has some great restaurants, the castle is good (get the audio tour), great bakery by the castle and the bird of prey centre with Duncombe park is worth a visit (no dogs in the centre but you can walk them around the park).
Helen and Dave were very friendly and accommodating. Dave met us and made us feel welcome and informed as soon as we arrived. The cottage was well equipped, clean and cosy. A lovely way to start the new Year. Thank you
Lovely week away hosted by Helen and Dave. Cottage is in a quiet location with lots of walks right from the front door. Dog friendly with the fenced paddock to let off lead right across the driveway. Cottage itself was well appointed and easy to relax in. Master bed was a little soft for our preference but everything else was good. Helmsley is a 5 minute drive or hour country walk away. Dave recommended some places to eat nearby and both were lovely. White swan for a Sunday roast and La Trattoria for an Italian. Hosts live in separate cottage on site and are approchable but not intrusive. Would definitely recommend.
We had a wonderful stay! The hosts were super responsive to messages, they allowed us time to settle in and popped over to check that we were OK. The surroundings were super peaceful and lovely, and our dog Charlie loved free roaming in the paddock. Highly recommend staying here.

Kirkdale cottage is popular with couples of all ages, families and single visitors - often keen walkers or visitors wanting to spend time in the North York Moors and surrounding areas. Popular attractions for children include Helmsley Castle, the Pickering/North York Moors Steam Railway, Go Ape at Dalby Forest, Flamingo Land, and the chocolate and Viking experiences at York, and the adventure playground at Castle Howard.
We are less than 2 miles from Helmsley - with its castle, walled gardens, spa hotel facilities, heated outdoor swimming pool in summer, numerous pubs, cafes and restaurants. The market square has a good choice of traditional pubs in surrounding villages and Helmsley hosts a number of cafes, restaurants and pubs, including a micro-brewery. Many of Helmsleys amenities welcome dogs.
We are in a tranquil location in a rural agricultural community, but with the benefit of easy access to a range of tourist destinations and sporting activities. It is an ideal base for the Yorkshire moors, dales, coast and York. The cottage is popular with walkers, cyclists and families wanting to explore North Yorkshire - we are within easy reach of the North Yorkshire coast (Whitby, Scarborough, Robin Hoods Bay), Pickering, York, Castle Howard. We are a stones throw from Ampleforth Abbey, The White Horse at Kilburn and the stunning views of Sutton Bank. York is approximately 23 miles away (c. 45 mins) and has been voted Britains most popular city due to its castle, walls, museums, shops and Minster; it is particularly popular with our guests whatever the weather. The picturesque steam railway from Pickering crosses Goathland/Heartbeat country to the coast at Whitby; Flamingo Land (near Malton) offers a different kind of day out - with its zoo and theme park.
We are open all year and guests love to enjoy the changing seasons, making use of the log burner in the colder months. We are popular with dog owners in November and New Year due to our quiet location (the lack of fireworks). There are plenty of nature walks into the quiet countryside from our doorstep, as well as further afield.
There is very limited public transport and you will need a car in order to reach and enjoy our local area. There are train services to York (mainline from London in about 2.5 hours), Thirsk and Malton (both approx 13 miles away). Car hire can be arranged in advance at York station. Local taxis can also be booked for nights out in Helmsley but we are only a 1.5 mile drive away.

Kirkdale Cottage is popular with cyclists, runners and walkers - getting around using your own steam means you can see the best of Yorkshire's scenery at your own pace.
