The Garden Lodge was dingy and dated. The top floor where the bedrooms are is not enclosed and the property in on the main road so it is extremely noisy even with earplugs in. For these reasons we decided not to stay for two out of the four nights. Thankfully we were given a refund for the nights we did not stay as it is very expensive for the standard of the property. I would not recommend staying here.

The hot tub was amazing, the bathroom and all of the rooms were spacious, the WiFi was fast, and communication was excellent. This place was definitely an experience for city folk like us. If you want to feel like you’re in the jungle as you sleep, this is definitely the place to choose. For those that are noise sensitive, it’s worth mentioning that those jungle noises can get loud enough to awaken you in the night (particularly the howler monkeys)

Imagine waking up in a tropical garden to the squawk of toucans, chirping house geckos, the otherworldly cry of howler monkeys and—in the distance, 100 meters away through the jungle—the rhythmic thunder of the aqua-blue Caribbean crashing on the beach. The smell of fresh-baked sourdough drifts through the windows from Vida Sana Bakery (just across the street, a 2-minute walk) as your coffee brews, and you decide to get a loaf for breakfast out on the deck. This is every morning at Edsart’s Garden House, which is ideally located between the bustling stores and restaurants and Saturday farmers market of Puerto Viejo, and the postcard-perfect, uncrowded beach of Playa Uva. This was our favorite spot on a two-week trip to Costa Rica. Book it now: You won’t be disappointed. Recommendations: Pita Bonita (BYOB) has great, reasonably-priced Middle Eastern food; the jerk chicken stand on Playa Cocles is outrageously tasty and a good value; Old Harbour Super is the best grocery with the widest selection, but Diamanté has the best craft beer and wine options; closer by, El Duende Gourmet has a good selection of baked goods (at gourmet prices), and Super Cocles is a solid local grocery; the Caribeans chocolate tour is a regional highlight, and totally worth $18; Jaguar Rescue Center is nice, but can be tough with kids; there’s good people watching on the beach at Puerto Viejo, but Playa Uva (just 7 or 8 mins past Edsart’s) is SOOO much better.

The photos don’t do it justice, a really amazing place to stay. We just needed a night to stay before going to our next location and wished we had longer here. So much wildlife all around, just hanging in the trees around you! And access to a beautiful beach at the end of the path. Stunning.
