Wetmore hosts 4 bedrooms accommodating 8 guests. Old Wetmore is a rural refuge in the heart of the Tasmanian Northern Midlands, 78 Km's south of Launceston. You will need to cross a railway line to enter the property - the trains are infrequent here, as little as two trains a day, rarely more than four. (Please stop, read and obey the railway signs). It's a unique place - halfway between Hobart and Launceston – offering the chance to indulge in a quiet country life while still close enough to a civilsed café latte and an excellent vanilla slice at friendly Ross village. The Space There’s an unpretentious authenticity to Old Wetmore where age is a timeless beauty, and hand-crafted features accentuate earthy textures in hand sawn Tasmanian oak and local sandstone. The building has been sensitively restored by a master craftsman builder with a particular passion for Tamanian colonial buildings. Every element has been selected with purpose under a corrugated iron roof that replaces the original hand-split shingle roof. Pretty rural views appear through each and every window in a house with four king-sized bedrooms to accommodate eight guests. The main bedroom located on the ground floor has a custom-built, king size platform bed, under an original ceiling made from long hand-split boards finessed with a hand planed regency edging at the end of each board. It’s a breathtaking bit of heritage work, naïve and rustic, for those who notice the finer details. Your comfort is assured in luxurious king-sized beds with feather quilts and king size feather pillows. For extra family members joining your stay the fourth bedroom has two long single beds. To complete the comfort experience, the beds are topped with Tasmanian 100 % Merino wool blankets. A fully equipped kitchen comes complete with an induction cooktop and oven. Dinnerware, glassware, copper cookware, and a silver teapot for a proper cup of afternoon tea. It’s all here. Next to the kitchen is the dining space with bespoke table with reclaimed Tasmanian Oak. Rich in texture and weathered by time, this piece, like so many of our handmade elements, have been crafted lovingly by a skilled Tasmanian artisan. The Romance Though it never snows here, Tasmania is known for its wild and rugged weather, so we’re ready to ensure guest comfort with a two-heat pump and wood heater maximizing comfort on the coldest nights. We always make sure there’s a ready supply of chopped firewood so interior walls that are half-a-meter thick radiate warmth. More wood is stacked on the side veranda. There are additional heat panels in all rooms if ever needed on frosty mornings. The lounge room has acres of couch space for friends and family. And out in the stone courtyard, a big outdoor table under the olive trees is all the enticement needed for long, lazy mediterranean style lunch with a glass of vino. The house is something of a juxtaposition: large by historical standards but intimate in feel; humble but refined. There are original panes of glass in the windows overlooking the small lake at the front of the house where wild ducks and swans are sometimes seen and, if you’re very lucky, you might see our platypus too.
