The Local Area.
Carrigeen Mountain is located in County Limerick within the Galty Mountain range on the border with the counties of Tipperary and Cork. The house is south facing so there are grand views of the Knockmealdown Mountains of Tipperary and Waterford. As you step out of the door there are numerous walks for every level of fitness whether you want to climb to the summit of Galtymore or enjoy a leisurely walk.
The name "Galty” roughly derives from "Mountains of the Forests" in English. The Galty Mountains are Ireland's highest inland mountain range. The highest peak is Galtymore which rises to 3009 Ft.
There are 5 corrie lakes on the mountain range including Lough Musky, Lough Curra, and Lough Bohreen. Along the outlying ridge of the Galty Mountains lies Moanour Mountain. Part of this mountain has been protected as a Special Area of Conservation due to the presence of rare grassland habitat and rare arctic alpine plants such as the small white orchid.
Between the Galty Mountains and the Slievenamuch Ridge is the Glen of Aherlow, a stunningly beautiful valley that is also very popular with walkers. There are also shorter local walks that take in the beautiful scenery and seclusion of the area.

Kilbeheny Village is 10 minute’s drive from the house and the nearest town is Mitchelstown which is twenty minutes drive. It is a 15-minute drive to the M8 (Motorway link between Dublin and Cork). Cork City & Limerick City are approximately an hour’s drive away.
Local places of interest include Cahir Castle and the Swiss Cottage, The Rock of Cashel, Mitchelstown Caves, Lismore Castle & Gardens, Mount Mellary, the beautiful Vee Valley and the Glen of Aherlow. We can advise you on local eateries, events etc. on your visit.
Burke’s Place is ideal for hill walkers or guests who want to get to know the local area. Whatever the activity all guests can relax in a peaceful, friendly, comfortable environment.
The History.
My Father was born at Burke's Place and my Mother was born in the neighbouring townland of Carrigeen. The house was always known as Burke’s Place so we have retained the name. My parents were part of the mass emigration from the mountain in the 1950’s and they made a life for themselves in England. As children we spent our summers here so I have a huge emotional connection to the mountain. My father’s home place was sold out of the family but 20 years later myself and my husband purchased the cottage and land to raise our own family.

Carrigeen Mountain is a secluded area so it is necessary to have a car.
