This is a renovated 1910 home that housed two families of workers from the Bakerton Quarry. The quarry was in operation from the mid 1800s to the 1930s and was one of the largest employers in Jefferson County. Bakerton itself was a hopping place at its peak, with several car dealerships, general stores, lots of bars and churches! Now it is a remnant of its former self but you can still get a feel for what it must have been back then! The little Bakerton shop is still running and was taken over by a young couple last year. Get your Black Dog coffee, Bolivar bread and ice cream here! My house was owned by the quarry until all operations stopped and it then was bought by a developer in the 1970s when several of the lots near the Potomac River and Bakerton itself were sold off. My house is on Timber Lane which is a lovely leafy lane occupied by farmers and families. On my property are the remains of the original structure which was the first farmhouse in the neighborhood pre-quarry. I’m still digging for more info on that but you can see the foundation and the old flagstone marking the entrance of the house. While not part of the history of the house I did find an old civil war uniform badge in the basement! And of course lots of old bottles and farm implements keep turning up.
