Bashers Rest is a brand new, two bedroom property, located in the picturesque village of Bishops Tawton; just a few miles from the market town of Barnstaple. Offering open plan living for easy socialising, ideal for couples and loved ones. Located in a rural setting with fantastic views over the Taw Valley, we are only a few minutes cycle ride from the famous Tarka Trail, where you can explore the Taw Estuary to Westward Ho in one direction, and Saunton sands and Woolacombe bay in the other. Bask in the sunshine outside the kitchen door on our spacious balcony whilst enjoying the stunning views across the Taw valley and its tidal river, towards the fields and folly beyond, a real sight to watch the sunset in the evenings. Bashers consists of an open plan lounge with freeview TV and Wifi, and dining area, a well equipped kitchen, with a washing machine, dish washer and large fridge freezer. Downstairs there are two double bedrooms. One has two twin beds which can be moved to create a super king (if booked in advance) and one king size bedroom, with doors leading onto a second balcony area, with stairs leading to a private seating area. For comfort, both rooms have fully equipped private ensuite shower rooms. Outside: Access the rear of the property which is fully fenced to provide both privacy and safety, and is for the sole use of guests, via a wooden gate and gravelled steps leading down to several small seating areas providing stunning views looking down the valley, towards the church. There is also a small astro turf area for your four legged family members to stretch their legs, at their convenience.
From start to finish our weekend was wonderful. Julie is a generous host; we were welcomed by a lovely cream tea and wine in the fridge. Although her and Dave live next door they are unobtrusive but always happy to offer help and advice if needed. The flat is beautiful; very tastefully decorated with everything you might need, especially the kitchen. The icing on the cake is the outdoor areas; two furnished balconies, the top one being very spacious, with fabulous views. A great space to unwind after taking advantage of the beaches and great walks in North Devon. There's a traditional pub within walking distance but be aware it's closed on Monday and Tuesday. We had a relaxing time and would definitely stay again if we're in the area. Thanks Julie and Dave.
Bishops Tawton is a picturesque village, based in a rural setting nestled under the protection of nearby Codden Hill on one side, and the beautiful Taw valley, and tidal river on the other. The famous Tarka Trail walking route traverses Codden Hill, through the village and down into Barnstaple, where you can cycle or walk to explore the Taw Estuary and beyond .
The thatched Chichester Arms pub is only a 10 minute stroll downhill from Bashers or a few minutes by car, and is well worth the visit. The walk back up, however, is quite steep.
Bashers Rest is ideally situated in Bishops Tawton, just off the A377 which is the scenic route into and out of North Devon. We are easily accessible by car and on the main bus route (there is a bus stop approximately 200 yards from the front door). We are just over two miles from Barnstaple town centre where you will find ample parking facilities (cash or RingGo app)
The nearest train station is in Barnstaple with hourly trains running to Exeter, where you can visit the beautiful cathedral and enjoy the many diverse restaurants or access travel links to the rest of the country.
The Tarka trail can be accessed in two places, half a mile from Bashers Rest, and we are perfectly situated for walkers wishing to access the South West Coast Path from Lynton to Hartland Point. As well as easy access to all of North Devon Coast's beaches, we are also within easy reach of Exmoor and Dartmoor.
We are also very lucky to have Codden Hill which provides an excellent view of the surrounding landscape. Rising over 190 metres, there are views of both Dartmoor, to the south, and Exmoor to the north on a clear day. There are a number of footpaths that give access to the site and Codden Hill is just a short walk away from your front door.
A more leisurely walk will lead you past the church and out onto the banks of the river Taw. This is the route we normally take with our dog, Wilfred, who loves to get his paws wet. Please note it is a tidal river so please check the tidal times.
We are a short drive from the beautiful North Devon coast making a day out at the beach easy. Woolacombe and Croyde are approximately 20-30 minutes drive in one direction, depending on the time of year, and Instow and Westward Ho are 15 - 20 minutes in the other, but we are happy to share our local road knowledge to help you avoid the summer traffic.
There are several excellent golf courses nearby including Portmore which offers both 18 and par three courses, plus a state of the art floodlit TOPTRACER driving range. The club house offers a varied food menu with seating enjoying panoramic views of the estuary and Lundy island on sunny days.
