A fantastic host who with a lovely property. Really enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend. Look forward to returning again in the future.
Lovely place to stay. Jon was very friendly and helpful. Rooms were a good size. Location is beautiful. thank you Jon
Good communication. Place was clean and had all that you need when staying away. Beds comfortable, rooms spacious. Lovely seating area with nice views.
Jon’s cottage was very comfortable with a huge bed in the master bedroom! All mod cons in the kitchen and good bathroom facilities. There’s a lovely view over the valley and it’s a 30 min walk to the sea. The track up to the cottage was quite tricky and not for the faint hearted, but we managed to tackle it. There was a bit of noise from upstairs, but it wasn’t intrusive. It’s handy having a Co-op right opposite the track to the house, and we had a nice meal at the Pack o’ Cards pub. A lovely holiday - thanks!
Very nice place, although the road to the house was extremely bumpy and unmade. We had a problem with the smoke detector going off nearly every time we cooked , could do with an extractor fan above cooker. Beds were very comfortable and everywhere was very clean ! Overall we enjoyed our stay.
Combe Martin is a resort on the North Devon coast situated in a sheltered valley on the western fringe of the Exmoor National Park. The village is located close to some of the most stunning coastal scenery in the area, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). There are spectacular views across the bay to dramatic headlands beyond and the small, peaceful cove has changed little over the years. Boats are still moored in the harbour, although there are more pleasure craft than fishing boats these days.
At low tide there are large expanses of golden sand accessible in addition to a sheltered sandy cove, making the area ideal for family holidays. The nearby countryside and coastline has numerous footpaths and bridleways for walking and riding. Visit the Exmoor National Park website for ideas on excellent walks, or the South West Coast Path website for walks taking in circular walks based on the coast path.
Combe Martin claims to have the longest main street of any village in the country. The street winds along the valley for more than two miles. The Pack o' Cards Inn was built in 1626 by George Ley of Marwood, to celebrate a large win at cards. The building has 52 windows (one for each card in the pack), 4 floors (one for each suit) and 13 doors on each floor (one for each card in the suit). The whole structure is said to resemble a pack of cards in a heap.
About a mile inland is the church of St. Peter ad Vincula a red sandstone building. The southern door has a Sanctuary Ring. The Sanctuary Ring was clutched by fleeing criminals who were thus able to escape arrest and imprisonment, providing they confessed their crimes and left the country. The practice was abolished in the 17th century. This is a tranquil setting with a small stream running by the churchyard wall.
Each year on the Spring Bank Holiday, Combe Martin celebrates the traditional ceremony of the Hunting of the Earl of Rone. This is a traditional pagan hobby horse procession, followed by a chase through the woods in pursuit of the Earl. When he is caught, he is placed backwards on a donkey and led in a procession to the beach where he is finally dumped in the sea.
From the 13th until the 19th century, both silver and lead were mined in Combe Martin. In addition, iron ore was mined from the beach beneath the Little Hangman, a 700 feet high hill close to the village. Manganese was also mined not too far away. Nothing remains of these enterprises today apart from a few lonely ruins and the Silver Mine which is managed by local enthusiasts.
The views from both the Little Hangman and the higher Great Hangman are well worth the effort. These are the high points of the edge of Exmoor, offering views of the moors and the coastline.
Exmoor was the first area in Europe to be designated an International Dark Sky Reserve. Holdstone Down, a short drive from Combe Martin, is a perfect spot for stargazing. For more information on Stargazing on Exmoor, visit their page on stargazing which shows relevant events.
There are lots of paths around Combe Martin, down to the beach and up onto the moor. Combe Martin is on a beautiful section of the southwest coast path.
The village is served by bus throughout the day and there are plenty of local taxis. Its only about a 20 minute walk to the sea, buy if you want to drive there is a pay and display right on the front. Ilfracombe is a 10 minute drive and Woolacombe is about 20 minutes away.
