Bird in Hand is located in Calstock, a peaceful area full of natural beauty with many walks and trails to help you get back to nature. From the cottage, you’ll see views over the Calstock Viaduct and surrounding Tamar Valley as well as the River Tamar which runs below. You can enjoy long country walks straight from the door, including Cotehele - a National Trust medieval house with Tudor additions.
You’re on the south Devon/Cornwall border, so there’s so much to explore in the local area. Calstock is a hidden gem, lesser-known than most other places in the region but still with so much to offer. With narrow streets, colourful cottages and friendly locals, it's quintessentially Cornish. Soak up the history of this incredible World Heritage Site, which was once a busy inland port serving the needs of the local mining industry.
The surrounding Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is packed with outdoor activities too. From mountain biking to stand-up paddle boarding to canoeing, there is something for everyone. And if that wasn't enough, Dartmoor is only a 20-minute drive where you'll find endless hikes, ancient pubs and wild horses roaming free. Further afield, Plymouth is just a 40-45 minute drive away, providing many fun family activities. Dartmoor Zoo and the pretty village hamlet, Antony Passage, are 45-minutes, as is the coastline which is studded with expansive beaches such as Tregantle and Seaton. You won't struggle to find a quiet corner of paradise!

Due to the remote nature of the Tamar Valley, we would recommend bringing a vehicle for your stay. There is free on-road parking just 10 metres outside the property.
