Cassie’s home is amazing! The home is rich in history and the location is amazing. We walked down to the Sussex Ox pub that is walking distance from the home and it was so charming. We loved our stay here!
The location of The Byre is lovely, with wonderful, peaceful walks from the door and very close to the Wilmington Man. Alfriston is a delightful village with lots of good eating options. It is very well located for visiting Charleston and other places further afield. There is certainly plenty to do in the area, though the house itself is a very relaxing place to spend time in and has a really interesting selection of books. The owners were on hand and concerned to make our visit a good one. We hadn't realised that the attractive copper bath isn't full size and that the hose attached doesn't serve as a shower-over-bath. Shower lovers be aware! The bathroom basin is also mini. This wouldn't have stopped us wanting to stay there as the setting is idyllic and the conversion from cow barn is very well done and full of character. The bed was extremely comfortable with lovely linen. I'm not a massive fan of plastic plants but I understand they look good on social media.
Truly amazing space - we had a super relaxing weekend. Great access to 7 sisters and Friston woods for great walks - can’t recommend enough!!
The Byre is simply beautiful! It is very comfortable and had everything we needed and more. Cassie was very thoughtful in providing a "welcome basket" with a range of goodies as well as essentials! The Byre is set in rural, peaceful surroundings . It is surrounded by well marked footpaths and walking into Alfriston for an evening meal was delightful and quite magical on a summer's evening.
Cassie has done amazing job on the accommodation. It was so beautiful to stay there. Tastefully decorated , such charming grounds and a truly relaxing time. We were at a weekend event nearby and the barn was the perfect anecdote to our busy day. It gave our weekend the perfect balance. Highly recommend this place.
Only 1.5 hours from London, The Byre is surrounded by famous landmarks to visit, walks and coastline to discover, local food and drink to indulge in and an array of charming villages and nearby towns to explore.
For those looking to immerse themselves into the natural landscape, you couldn’t be better situated. Within walking distance from The Byre rests The Long Man of Wilmington, a large chalk figure carved into the downs with interesting folklore surrounding it’s origins. Wilmington church and it’s 1600 year old yew tree is also well worth a visit.
As well as many beautiful Sussex walks, view points and landmarks, there is also fantastic local food and drink to enjoy. Only a stone’s throw away from The Byre is The Sussex Ox, a lovely local pub with its own organic farm, serving local, ethical and sustainable produce. Futher down the road is the fabulous Long Man Brewery producing sustainable, award winning craft beer and offers shopping, tasting rooms and tours of the Brewery.
Just over a mile away is the medieval village of Alfriston which lies in the valley of the River Cuckmere. Absorb its rich history by visiting the magnificent Alfriston church known as the ‘cathedral of the south’ and don’t miss The Clergy House – the very first property bought by the National Trust in 1896 (which features the renowned oak leaf logo caved into the building).
This picturesque village is crammed with little independent shops including art, antiques, vintage clothes, homewares, gifts, a bookshop and a very useful local store. With three tearooms, two country pubs and three hotels you are completely spoilt for choice when it comes to locally prepared food and drink!

From the A27, take turning into Milton Street (follow signs to Sussex Ox pub) and follow the lane for about half a mile. The Byre is a flint and weatherboard clad barn and will be located on your right hand side. Look out for a small gated entrance between two flint walls, directly after passing a farm track on your righthand side. If you drive past The Byre on your right, you've gone too far. Please do don't drive down the gravel driveway named Milton Street Farmhouse (this is private driveway nothing to do with The Byre - thank you).
