One of the things we love about Birchgrove is our wonderful neighbourhood - great parks, pubs and people!!
Our favourite coffee shop is Charlottes Cafe on Rowntree Street and Sukis on Grove Street (these are about 7 minutes walk away). We loooove the Riverview Hotel, and the lovely Royal Oak is in walking distance.
As mentioned one of the best things about our area is being surrounded by parks and water and being able to jump on a Sydney ferry and head across the city! Ballast Point Park and Birchgrove Oval both have fantastic spots to watch the Sydney NYE fireworks!
A 10 minute walk (up to Balmain shops) will take you to the thriving Darling Street with amazing restaurants (Chon, the Dry Dock and Gigis are our faves!), bars (Wilhelmina, The Cottage and The lodge are well frequented by us!), and great specialty shops. Local day spas, hair and nail salons, book stores and massage therapy rooms are in abundance. Another good local is the Balmain Bowling Club with great food and live bands on the weekends. There is also a great grocer and laundromat 5 minutes walk away at Birchgrove shops.
The best way to spend a weekend would be - stroll along Darling Street to Rozelle - finishing at the Rozelle School markets...then a drink and snack at Corner Bar! Or…a walk down to Balmain East along the foreshore and breakfast at The Fenwick….or dinner at the Exchange Hotel and sit outside and watch the people passing…Or a ferry from Balmain East over to Barangaroo for some shopping and a swim in the harbour pool.

Balmain ferry is a 6 minute stroll from the house and the ferry takes 8 mins to circular quay or to Kirribilli (Luna park, kiribilli markets and McMahon’s point). The bus is 6 mins walk as well and leaves from Rowntree Street outside Charlotte Cafe (straight to the city on 441) or on Grove Street (to the art gallery direct). It is 10 mins walk up to vibrant Balmain village (its is all uphill but very low gradient!). It is easy to bike around too.
An Uber to the city costs about $18 and to the airport about $50. It is a very walkable suburb and we also bike ride a lot to the Bay Run (Callan Park), and around the local area to ROZELLE and Lilyfield.
