The prefecture of Lassithi has a variable and contrasting landscape, home to endless sandy beaches and wonderful mountains. The vicinity of the Villas to some important Cretan must-see attractions such as Knossos Palace, Spinalonga islet, Panagia Kera, Toplou Monastery and Mochlos traditional Cretan fisherman’s village is also a significant asset making them an ideal holiday base.
Elounda (3,4km) and Agios Nikolaos (9km) are the closest major towns, definitely worth-visiting, as they are known around the world for their beauty and where guests can find all kinds of daily amenities, restaurants and cafes. Elounda is famous for its luxurious accommodation options that host celebrities from all over the world, but apart from its glamorous character, Elounda has to offer visitors some of the most beautiful landscapes in Crete.
Plaka is located opposite the entrance of the Elounda lagoon, 8,3 km away from the Villas, in one of the most beautiful spots of the entire island boasting wonderful views to Spinaloga. You can find several traditional taverns and lovely old houses, which give you the impression that time has stopped a century ago.
A visit to Spinaloga is also a must, as it is a significant historical attraction of Crete. The history of the island still inspires awe. It has been a Venetian fortress; a castle colony; a rebel refuge; a communication link with Cairo during the Second World War. Also known as the Island of the Lepers, Spinalonga was the place where all lepers from Crete and the rest of the country were quarantined at until 1957. For many decades it remained unexploited. However, following the growing tourist interest, the state started the systematic restoration and repair of the old buildings, fortified Venetians walls, old residences and streets on the islet. The Ministry of Culture has requested the inclusion of Spinalonga in the UNESCO World Heritage Monuments List. From a structural and architectural point of view as well as given the aesthetics of the landscape as a whole, the island still retains an unsurpassed beauty.
The famous Minos Palace in Knossos lies 5 kilometres southeast of Heraklion (71 km from the Villas) and is the most visited archaeological site in Crete with more than 1.000.000 visitors per year. Knossos was the most important city on Crete before the Roman Era and the center of the first brilliant European civilization, the Minoan. The palace was the seat of the legendary Minos Kings and has been associated with famous Greek myths, like that of Daedalus and Icarus, the Labyrinth and the Minotaur.
Kolokytha is a small island just opposite the Peninsula of Spinalonga, just 7 Km away from the Villas with its fantastic homonym beach (also known as Agios Loukas beach). To access the beach you should first follow a scenic route: From the town of Elounda, follow the road leading to the east, along the shore. You will pass the old salt pans of Elounda on your right hand. The road at this point runs along a narrow strip of land and heads to the Peninsula of Spinalonga (some call the Spinalonga Peninsula falsely as Kolokytha). On the route you will meet the small canal built by the French army in 1897 to connect the lagoon of Elounda to Mirabelo Bay. There are a few windmills around, a picturesque bridge and boats in the canal, creating a unique landscape. Then the road turns to a dirt track and after 200-300m you have to turn right. Drive in this track and cross the peninsula of Spinalonga vertically, having stunning views of its rocky shores and the abandoned farms.
Other smaller beaches are also close by: Havania beach (5,7km) Mirabello beach (6,1km), Chiona (6,4km) and Schisma Elountas (7km).
Also, being just 20-25min away from the beaches of Ammoudara, Voulisma and Karavostasi, you have the chance to visit a different beach every day and enjoy your swim. Voulisma or Golden Beach is a beautiful beach with white sand and amazing turquoise waters. The beach is very well organized, although we would like to see that secluded. Karavostasi is the most quiet beach of the area and it’s sandy but not organized. It is formed in the western part of the largest gulf of Istro and is ideal for relaxing moments. All around there are many tamarisk, carob and olive trees. In the same bay, east of Karavostasi you’ll see a big rock, on which there are the ruins of the Minoan settlement Priniatikos Pirgos.
