Set in the heart of the Scottish Borders, Bowhill House & Grounds are the perfect base to start your holiday and explore the region. Bowhill House itself is open to the public on limited dates in the summer months or by appointment, and the Grounds are available for walking or cycling throughout the year.
Bowhill is the ancestral home of the Scott Clan and is the Scottish Borders’ home of the Duke of Buccleuch. Bowhill House itself dates back to 1812 and was greatly expanded during the 19th century. Some of the world-renowned Buccleuch Art Collection is available to admire within the House, with works by Canaletto, Gainsborough, Reynolds and many others on display.
A visit to the Adventure Playground is a must for any little adventurers while visiting Bowhill. Zip-wires, slides, swings and the large wooden fort are sure to entertain kids of all ages for hours. The playground is open during the summer months and the Scottish Borders’ schools’ Easter holidays.
A new addition to Bowhill, which opened in 2021, is the Courtyard Gallery. This is a dedicated space set in the central courtyard at Bowhill House which hosts temporary exhibitions of wonderful art and sculpture. Ideally located within the same courtyard, the Old Kitchen Café is a superb space to take a break from exploring the Estate and enjoy a light lunch or some delicious cakes. The café is open during the summer months, June to end of September.
For those who enjoy whiling away the hours by the river, salmon fishing is available on the River Ettrick between February and November each year. The lower loch at Bowhill is also stocked with trout and is available for fishing between April and October annually.
As a tourist destination, The Borders has an abundance of activities and attractions to keep you busy during your stay. There are numerous historic houses, castles, and abbeys to explore along with many outdoor activities to keep you busy and, don’t miss the new Great Tapestry of Scotland to discover in nearby Galashiels.
