Burnside is a cosy, secluded bolthole and perfect base to explore old Galloway. Built in the 1850s, our family restored the bungalow in 1970 and we've been visiting since. The cottage sits in a tranquil valley, a mile from the sea. It'll be just you, the wildlife and the view, within easy reach of beaches, rocky coves, and hills. The house is in an enclosed half-acre site. It sleeps five in double, twin and single bedrooms. The kitchen/living room are open plan with log burning stove and WiFi. Burnside Cottage sleeps five in three bedrooms and is very well-equipped to meet the needs of families, lovers of local food and those who want to relax in a beautiful, peaceful environment. The cottage has an open plan kitchen/diner/living room creating a warm communal feel, enhanced by the log fire in our wood-burning stove, which can pump out the heat on cool evenings. There is usually a supply of wood for you to use. The holiday cottage has everything you’ll need for a comfortable stay from expresso coffee-maker to giant lobster pan, as well as the usual dishwasher, washer/dryer, microwave, electric cooker, plus cot, high chair, freeview TV, DVD player with films and box sets, binoculars, guide books, maps and lots and lots of information about the local area. The main room opens out onto an enclosed garden and patio at the back. This part of the house faces south west and the sun streams over it in the evening. In the morning, the sunlight flows down the across the fields and wild garden at the front, flooding the house.
Thank you Charles, I loved it, just what I was needing and wish I could've stayed for longer. The peace & quiet was amazing. The wildlife that visited the garden was incredible, Hares, Deer & a good variety of birds. I watched seals & Gannets at Port William harbour. The beach at Monreith was stunning. Isle of Whithorn is a very beautiful village, I loved it. The loch walk through the estate, just at the bad bend enroute to Port William, was very enjoyable, nice scenery and friendly estate staff. I don't have a negative on my short stay, I would love to return for a longer visit.
We were looking for somewhere to stay on or near the south-west coast of Scotland and came upon Burnside Cottage quite by chance. I warmly recommend this cottage! It is comfortable, well-equipped and offers excellent value as a location from which to explore this part of the world. We very quickly settled in and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. We did have quite a lot of rain while we were there, but in the evenings it was great to 'batten down the hatches' and to sit around the impressively functional wood burner. An excellent holiday!
Beautiful, tranquil and cosy cottage. Perfect for our family trip. Charles, the host, was extremely helpful. Highly recommend this cottage.
Wonderful spot. Very quiet. Cottage so cozy with the wood burner and there was plenty of wood. Lots of little wrens frequented the garden and we were lucky enough to see some deer too
Galloway has 200 miles of coastline so there is no shortage of beaches and rocky coves to explore. Way out west in The Machars of Galloway you can have whole sandy beaches to yourself and take winding paths down to hidden bays.
If you enjoy walking and hiking then Galloway is the place for you. You can ramble from the back door of Burnside on quiet lanes and footpaths down to the fishing village of Port William; take coastal walks on cliff tops or sandy beaches and embark on expeditions in the Galloway Hills.
Galloway is also a fantastic place to cycle. Off road, through the trees and moors of the lower slopes of the Galloway Hills, or on the quiet roads of The Machars, the area south of Newton Stewart, you can wheel away to your heart's content. There is cycle hire in the area and a mountain bike centre at Kirroughtree, with bikes available to ride purpose-built trails.
This area is a superb natural environment, which supports a variety of habitats, including many important nesting sites. Whether you are relaxing in the garden at Burnside Cottage, peering over the precipitous cliffs of the Mull of Galloway or wandering in the ancient woodlands around the River Cree, there is a plethora of wildlife to enjoy.
When you look up at night in Galloway, the chances are you will see a whole lot more than usual. The region has one of the darkest skies in Europe, which makes it a fantastic place for stargazing. Since so few people live in this part of south west Scotland there is very little light pollution. From Galloway Forest Park, where almost nobody lives, more than 7,000 stars and planets can be seen on a clear night and the bright band of the Milky Way arcs across the sky. Galloway Forest Park was the first area in Britain to be designated a Dark Sky Park by the International Dark Sky Association, in 2009, recognising its special status.
There is parking for two cars outside the cottage. There is a lovely walk to Port William along a quiet lane and then up onto a ridge path (Garnet's Walk) overlooking Luce Bay (20 minutes). The area is good for bikes. Beaches are a short drive to Monreith (5-10 mins) and Garlieston (10-20 mins). Wigtown (Scotland's Book Town) is 15 minute drive and Newton Stewart 20-25 mins.
