Our second stay here - great location, house has everything you need as well as some extra touches like a lovely welcome hamper and information about the local area. Great communication throughout
The cottage is in a great location, very friendly neighbours, lots to do, helpful handbook. and useful guidebooks provided. We recommend the Wharton Arms for their parmos and lovely staff. We did have an issue whilst there - Sean was very quick to respond and proactive. Whilst it wasn't fully resolved during our short trip, he did send someone to try and sort it out and I'm confident that all will be well for the next visitors.
We were a family of 2 adults and 2 teenage daughters. We stayed for 4 nights and found the accommodation to be exactly as described. Sean was extremely helpful during the booking process. The house had everything you need, the kitchen is fully equipped with plenty of utensils. There is a washing machine. The house was very spacious and extremely clean and there were plenty of towels. The bathroom has a shower and bath. The location was ideal for visiting Whitby, Saltburn on sea, Runswick bay and Staiths. The house is on a quiet street, with plenty of shops and restaurants, the house is also dog friendly. We would certainly stay here gain in the future.
Fantastic place great decor and situated perfect nice neighbours . Really clean and very welcoming
what a wonderful home you have, our stay was just perfect for us, our boys and dog Reggie, our boys are Autistic so going away is always a worry but they felt really at home, we had everything we needed, the heating was great as it was freezing 🥶 the bored games were all used and we had lots of laughs. 100% will be back thanks again
Skelton’s centre is round the corner on High Street, it is a quaint and friendly village centre with an abundance of amenities just a short walk away (2 minutes). There is Co-op supermarket for any items you may need. There are three pubs: The Wharton Arms on High Street and The Duke William and Royal George Pub which are 7 minutes’ walk, located on Northern Terrace- just off the A173. There are two local cafes: Cake Toppers and the Deli at No. 85, a bakery (Cooplands) and restaurant named R&R Bistro. There is also Little Acorns play café if you have little ones and are in need of some local entertainment for a rainy day.
In addition to these walkable amenities, there is also a large retail park only 3 minutes’ drive away or 15 minutes walking. This has an Aldi and Asda supermarket (including Asda petrol station), Home Bargains, B&M, Hardware stores, Greggs, Dominos and McDonalds. There is also another pub here which is both family friendly and offers reasonably priced and good quality food – The Longacre. Just search on Maps for nearest Aldi or any of the above shops and it will direct you accordingly.
Saltburn- by- the- Sea (5 minutes drive)
The delightful coastal town Saltburn-by-the-sea bestows plenty of Victorian charm and thrills. From the water balanced funicular on the cliffs down to the last remaining pier in Yorkshire, Saltburn promises its visitors an authentic seaside experience!
There’s plenty to entertain too as the town has an up-and-coming arts scene, lots of restaurants and plenty of daring water sports to try.
From our house, Saltburn can be reached by walking a section of the Cleveland Way. This is an off-road walk in beautiful forest and takes only 45 minutes! Please access the path on the newer estate behind the house. Phone maps will show you the way if on walking setting.
Guisborough (10 minutes drive)
Guisborough is a market town with a range of shops, cafes, restaurants and bars. Guisborough Priory is free to walk around- the ruins and the grounds are stunning. Enjoy cocktails and crafts beers in the Monk or a drink in the more traditional pub-The Ship Inn. There’s also a Morrisons supermarket café or Wetherspoons for cheap eats.
Staithes (20 minutes drive)
Staithes is a charming, traditional fishing village and the perfect place to enjoy some time beside the sea. It embodies many of the reasons why seaside towns hold such appeal. Once one of the busiest fishing ports on the North-East coast, Staithes boasts a long proud history as the one-time home of famous Royal Navy captain and explorer, Captain James Cook. It has many shops on the charming, cobbled streets and the famous Cod and Lobster pub on the corner of the Harbour front.
Whitby (30 minutes drive)
Whitby is constantly being voted as one of the UK’s top seaside destinations for holidaymakers. This magical fishing port perched on the edge of the North York Moors attracts tourists from all over the World.
Whitby is a charming town that rests at the mouth of the river Esk. The well-known explorer Captain Cook began his famous sailing adventures here and you will find a replica of his ship the HMS Endeavour in the harbour. Also, writer Bram Stoker experienced a stroke of genius in Whitby when he first conceived the idea for his classic novel Dracula. The town also has continued fame for its reputation as one of the UK’s primary fishing ports. Lots to see and do, but can also be very busy in peak season, so we’d advise to get there early.
Local Beaches
In addition to the beautiful beach and promenade at Saltburn, there are also other beautiful beaches and coastline to explore in the surrounding area.
Skinningrove (10 mins)
Skinningrove beach, also known as Cattersty Sands is a hidden gem! The sandy beach stretches for miles and is practically unspoilt and is a great place for a walk or to spend a few hours and take in the beautiful coastline. It also has a small free car park.
Runswick Bay (20 mins)
A short drive from the holiday let is the breathtaking Runswick bay.
The cark park is free on Sundays- be aware that the walk down from the car park to the beach is steep and therefore may be difficult for those who have reduced mobility.
Sandsend (25 mins)
Another jewel in the coast’s crown – Sandsend is a picture-perfect fishing village that is well worth a short stroll around.
Saltwick Bay (30 mins)
The main beach near Whitby and another fine example of rugged coastline and beautiful sand for building castles and long walks.
Robin Hoods Bay (35 mins)
A beautiful spot, just web search the images for all you need to know!
North Yorkshire Moors and Walks
As well as the wonderful coastal towns and beaches, the North Yorkshire moors are also on our doorstep and just south from Skelton. The Moors offer a multitude of walks and sightseeing. Danby lodge is the nearest visitor centre (20 mins) and there are year-round activities and events so keep your eye on their website. Other places of note are Goathland (home of Heartbeat) and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway line which has traditional steam trains in service!
The Cleveland Way offers many sections of walking from the Moors along the coast. The nearest is from Skelton to Saltburn, which is highly recommended. You can also walk from Saltburn to Staithes via Skinningrove and Boulby which takes you over the highest cliffs in England! Another treat.
Roseberry Topping is a distinctive high hill on the entrance to Guisborough Forest and is situated nearest to Newton-under Roseberry (20 minutes’ drive). This hill is a walkers favourite and although strenuous in sections, offers stunning views and a real sense of achievement on completion.
Most people will bring their car and that is the easiest way to visit the many amazing sites nearby. However there are direct trains to Saltburn from Manchester and other large cities can connect. once off the train we are a 10 minute bus journey. There are many local buses that run around the area and are frequent enough to plan day trips.
Please be aware, parking is on a residential street and usually there is space outside our house but not always. However you will only ever be one or two doors away and parking is free.
In busier periods, towns such as Staithes, Whitby and Saltburn can be congested. to park and will usually charge.
