St Ives, the most famous of Cornish holiday towns, loved for generations, is easy to reach by road or by air and easy by train, too, along one of the most spectacular railway journeys in Britain to crystal blue waters, golden sands and a warm welcome. We nearly forgot the mild sub-tropical climate, warmed year round by the Gulf Stream!
Life is cradled around the harbour where boats still land good catches of freshest fish for the local restaurants to nourish you with. Brought ashore on the ancient granite quays, the catch is of the highest quality for your dinner plate or for the tables of some of Britain's finest restaurants. A maze of tiny cobbled streets to wander through, lined by fishermen's cottages, with a breath taking seaside vista to greet you at the end of each one.
There's a blaze of colour all around the town: houses smothered in baskets of blooms, parks and public areas a rich spectrum of radiant colours. The mild climate and almost frost-free winters makes it possible to grow plants and shrubs normally native to semi-tropical countries hundreds of miles further south.
Take a leisurely walk along the coastal footpath, perhaps, south to Lelant with the opportunity to return by branch line train or opt for a more energetic hike west towards Zennor and Gurnards Head. Soak up the sounds and images of the mythical and rugged land. Paint, pencil and clay. St Ives is renowned for its art and rightly so as there are workshops, studios and galleries everywhere. Often you will find painters hurrying to finish a sketch before the light changes or before the waves wash their palettes away!
Tate St. Ives, part of the Tate Gallery in London, is a stunning building with a varying exhibition of local and national works, well worth a visit. The Gallery's inspirational building stands high above the magnificent surfing beach of Porthmeor. Allied to Tate St Ives is the Barbara Hepworth Museum, a lasting memorial to the great sculptress who lived and worked in St. Ives at her Trewyn Studio.
The cafes and restaurants open their doors, the town comes alive and you'll find that St Ives has evolved into a cosmopolitan and chic resort. Enjoy the view across to Godrevy Lighthouse, immortalised by the novelist Virginia Woolf, or take a short boat trip to watch seals basking on the rocks in the sunshine. Finally, as the disappearing sun paints the sea and sky in glorious pink, it is time to plan what to do tomorrow. St. Ives has something that will appeal to everyone, young or old.
THE BEACHES
Fine golden sand, crystal clear water. Awake to the gulls' cry, dress quickly and jog down the cool granite streets for a solitary early morning walk along the beach. Cool sand and warm water caress your soles, tickle your toes - a very long way from the busy rush of working life. Do this every day of your stay and with so many beaches to choose from here you would never tire.
A strange ripple, a little nose - a seal pops up in the harbour to say hello and to hold court with the intrigued throng. Dolphins, porpoises and basking sharks in the Bay, a myriad of little undersea worlds of shrimp, crab and anemone, rock pools to explore in timeless fashion. A precious twinkling jewel, sparkling colours, wonderful friendly people. The Bay of St Ives has more than its fair share of beaches and for fifty miles along the length of Cornish coastline there are magnificent open stretches of silky white and glowing sands.
The West Cornwall area can boast probably the cleanest bathing waters in Western Europe. There are award-winning beaches at Porthminster and Porthmeor, St. Ives and at Sennen, near to Lands End where European Blue Flag and Tidy Britain awards have been given for several years. Today the West Cornwall beaches measure up to the European Commission guidelines through South West Water's ambitious programme.
Each beach has its own charm and appeal; there are busy family beaches to popular water sports venues and wide-open flat sands and tucked away hidden suntraps. Most of the beaches employ fully qualified Lifeguards during the summer months.
Porthmeor is a Blue Flag Atlantic Ocean family and surfing beach with surf school, fine golden sand, good sunbathing by day and spectacular sunsets. During the summer, trained lifeguards ensure the bathing is as safe as possible. There are restaurant and café facilities right on the beach; toilets and beach huts on the terrace behind.
Porthgwidden is a delightful small sandy cove and sun-trap with safe bathing beach huts for hire and handy toilets. The brilliant white terrace houses the relaxed Porthgwidden Cafe and there's a kiosk for coffee and snacks. Porthgwidden is an ideal beach to catch the morning sun and stay all day.
Porthminster beach boasts almost half a mile of golden sands with calm sea conditions ideal for families. Porthminster has restaurant and café facilities, a scenic cliff walk to Carbis Bay on the South West Coast Path, a putting green, beach huts for hire, toilets and level access to the town centre. The St Ives branch line trains draw up at the top of the steps.
Carbis Bay has a large sandy privately owned beach with very safe bathing and almost always calm conditions. It is a lovely spot for children and has good facilities including café and toilet. The branch line train station is above the beach and there is convenient parking. The cliff walk to nearby Porthkidney Sands or St Ives starts just above the beach.
Porthkidney Sands is a vast expanse of sand backed by sand dunes and the West Cornwall Golf Links. It is at least five minutes’ walk from the parking area by Lelant Church to the beach. At low tide it can be almost a mile to the water's edge and beware the tide can come in very quickly across the flat sand. This beach is never overcrowded, but has no facilities.

If you are travelling to Cornwall by train you will be pleased to know that St Ives does have its own railway station via a connection from the main London to Penzance line at St Erth. Arriving by train not only means you avoid the search for a parking space but also get to experience some of the most incredible coastal views whilst travelling the 4-mile branch line, so picturesque that we would recommend the train journey to any visitors during their stay!
If you decide to arrive in St Ives by car, as well as the parking, another thing to consider is your route! The A30 is the main road through Cornwall and is made up mostly of dual carriageway, however, there are a few single-lane roads also! (A new dual carriageway is in the process of being built) So, during the holiday season, the A30 can get very busy.
There are two ways to drive into St Ives; via Halsetown or via Lelant and Carbis Bay. Our recommendation is to use the old coach road into St Ives so passing through Halsetown. When you exit the A30, follow the signs to St Ives past Dobbies garden centre on your right and at the mini roundabout, take the left turning and follow the brown signs to St Ives. Continue for a few miles and when you get to a T-junction, turn right towards to St Ives. Travel through Halsetown and take a right at the T-junction leading to St Ives town. You will find fewer hold-ups on this route and it drops down into St Ives via The Stennack instead of down the narrow hill of High Street that is a continuation of Tregenna Hill. Be warned, there are narrow lanes in St Ives.
Parking is always difficult in St Ives. It is usually possible to find a place in the large car park above the town, but it is probably better to park in St Erth or Lelant and take the train into St Ives.
