Granary Cottage is on the edge of the North York Moors National park, at the heart of a lovely and much under-rated rural and coastal area. From the door, set out on foot to explore the valley of Troutsdale, with Dalby Forest to the west, Hackness village to the east and the river Derwent flowing along. The closest places to eat out are the Moorcock Inn at Langdale End (Thur-Sun only) and the Everley Cafe near Hackness (daytimes only).
Mountain bikers will love the off-road trails at Dalby Forest (you can rent kit there), and the Forest also has a Go Ape in the treetops, with great zipwires and the usual vertigo-inducing set-up.
In Scarborough itself there's faded Victorian grandeur, two lovely sandy beaches, ranks of colourful beach huts at North Bay and, round every corner, delicious fish and chips. Seek out, also, fresh oysters, crab and lobster at the South Bay kiosks, hear the deck-chair summer concerts at the Spa, hire a pedalo in Peasholm Park, rent a surfboard or bodyboard (and wetsuit!) at North Bay or Cayton Bay, walk the clifftops from both ends of town, play minigolf, explore the castle, or browse the Victoria Road junk shops for vintage treasures.
At night, see a show at the Spa or Stephen Joseph Theatre, or get hold of advance tickets to the Open Air Theatre or a Dalby Forest concert. Scarborough's pubs and clubs have a busy live music and karaoke scene.
To both north and south lie miles of beautiful coastline - Robin Hood's Bay, Whitby, Sandsend, Staithes, Filey, Bempton, Flamborough Head.
Don't miss a drive or walk on the nearby North York Moors and a visit to some of the pretty towns and villages that surround them, such as Pickering, Thornton-Le-Dale, Hutton-Le-Hole, Goathland. From Pickering you can take a ride on the famous Pickering to Whitby steam train - a brilliant way to see the moors, with the opportunity to alight at villages along the way.
For groceries there are basic shops in Scalby, 6 miles away. The most convenient supermarkets to reach in Scarborough are Proudfoot, Aldi, Tesco (will deliver to cottage) and Sainsbury's (will deliver to cottage). Or visit Scarborough's traditional market hall, in the centre of town, to buy fruit, veg and meat.

Bring a car - you'll need one to get the best out of this fantastic area and to load up the kitchen with supplies.
