Sixgeary is a luxury self catering retreat on the Northwest coast of the Isle of Skye. The cottage is situated in Geary, a small crofting township on the beautiful Waternish Peninsula, overlooking Loch Snizort and has uninterrupted views to the Ascrib Islands and across the Minch to the Western Isles. This former Croft house has been renovated by award winning architects Dualchas to offer a light and modern space without losing any of its original character or charm. Sixgeary sleeps up to four people with two bedrooms - one double and one twin with luxury bedding provided. Both bedrooms have uninterrupted views out to Loch Snizort and The Ascrib Islands. Toilet/shower room is located upstairs and a full bath/toilet is located downstairs. The living room is warm and cosy with a Morso wood burning stove and is the ideal place to relax after a day out walking or exploring. The kitchen diner is sleek and contemporary and has been fitted with high quality neff appliances, including an induction hob. The floor to ceiling sliding doors flood the area with light and provide spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. They lead to an area of decking ideal for soaking up the sun or enjoying a meal or an evening drink. A barbecue is also available for use. Modern additions include under floor heating. The interiors are smart and simple with Ercol furniture. The cottage has unlimited Wi-fi and access to Netflix. The cottage sits in its own private grounds of one acre, with a well established garden of flowers, shrubs and herbs.
Sixgeary is the perfect place to stay at, if you’re looking for peace and quiet on the Isle of Skye. The house has all the amenities you need, with a superb equipped kitchen, comfy beds and nice bathrooms. Best of all is the view over Loch Snizort though. We spent hours just looking out over the water to the little isles and the port of Uig behind. Lovely for watching the sun rise too. The house is a great starting point for extended cycling tours and walks. The nearest shop is in Dunvegan, where there is also a nice café (The Misty) plus the Castle and other interesting sights to see. All in all we had a lovely time and hope to visit again. Thank you Susan! ✨
Geary (An Geàrraidh) is a small crofting township on the northeast coast of the Waternish peninsula. The cottage has uninterrupted views to the Ascrib Islands and across the Minch to the Western Isles.
The Waternish peninsula is one of the prettiest areas of Skye. Fairy Bridge is said to mark the place where a fairy wife of a MacLeod chief said good bye to her husband and child before going to live amongst her own people.
Trumpan Church is an old ruin in a beautiful location. This is where the MacDonalds came to exact their revenge on the MacLeods in 1578 for the Massacre of Eigg. The MacDonalds set fire to the church when it was full with all inside perishing except for one little girl who escaped through a small window and raised the alarm. The Clan chief on hearing this raised the fairy flag and set sail from Dunvegan. Lady Grange is also buried here.
Close by are the beautiful coral beaches and Dunvegan castle and gardens. The famous Fairy Flag is on display here.
Sixgeary is close to the historic fishing village of Stein which boasts the oldest inn on Skye - the Stein Inn. Almost next door is the renowned Michelin star Loch Bay Restaurant. A little further afield in Colbost is the acclaimed Three Chimneys restaurant. The Old School House restaurant in Dunvegan and the Edinbane Inn serve excellent food. The oldest bakery on Skye is also in Dunvegan and it sells fantastic artisan bread.
Geary is a short drive from the bustling harbour town of Portree with its numerous cafes and eateries.
Sea eagles can be observed from the cottage and in Loch Snizort basking sharks, porpoises, dolphins and whales can be spotted. The Ascrib islands are part of a special conservation area due to the significant breeding colonies of seals. Puffins also breed in the burrows on the Ascribs.
Skye provides a wealth of outdoor activities from world-class climbing, walking, kayaking, cycling, and whale watching. There are also many stunning coastal walks and it’s a great location for star gazing. The cottage has easy access to three of the islands dark sky discovery sites. Waternish was recently voted by Travel Magazine as having the best sunsets in the world.
There are a number of crafts practiced locally in Waternish. In Stein you will find Dandelion crafts and Skyskins is the only tannery in Scotland. At Carnach you can find Halistra Pottery. Close by is The Skye Shilasdair Shop (Dye house and exhibition).
You will need a car while staying at the cottage. We have a small store at the back of the cottage that can be used for storing bicycles.
