PISA, with its medieval city centre, atmospheric river running through the middle of the city, museums (just two of which are the San Matteo Museum and Palazzo Blu), is famous throughout the world for its Piazza dei Miracoli, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a must-see only 25 minutes’ drive away..
Every year, in the evening of 16th June, Pisa is lit up with more than 70,000 candles for the festival of Luminara di San Ranieri, the patron saint of the city.
The new tourist harbour at MARINA DI PISA also makes for a pleasant trip, only 15 minutes away from the city by car.
LUCCA, also known as the city of a hundred churches, has an extremely well-kept historic city centre, full of old palaces, towers and splendid squares, within its distinctive renaissance walls, and only 15 km away from Poggio La Fioraia.
Every third weekend of the month the characteristic antiques fair takes over the side-streets and historic squares of the city.
The Summer Festival is the city’s music festival, held, as its name suggests, during the warmer months of the year
For those wishing to immerse themselves in the countryside there are lovely outdoor walks at LAGO DI MASSACIUCCOLI, the lake that acted as an inspiration for the composer Puccini, where an important opera season takes place every summer at the theatre in Torre del Lago named after the great composer. On the other hand, you might want to head towards the coast, towards Marina di Vecchiano, through the Salviati pine woods.
MARINA DI VECCHIANO, with its dune-crowned beach, is situated in the protected area of the Migliarino – S. Rossore – Massaciuccoli Nature Reserve, a perfect place for peace and tranquility.
Finally, in little more than half an hour by car, you can arrive at the lively seaside resorts of VIAREGGIO and FORTE DEI MARMI, a favourite holiday destination for both the Italian and international jet-set, famous for its shops and exclusive night spots, its luxurious beach clubs, its intense night-life and its summer festivals, such as that at “La Versiliana”.
