El Refugio is a wonderful, magical place. The house is beautiful and spotless, with tons of space and stunning outdoor views. It was fantastic to rent a car and stay away from Oaxaca’s bustle, and we were so happy to return here each night. We personally did not feel like cooking, but Barbara provided excellent recommendations in the area just a short drive away so we got to eat at fantastic places we never would have found on our own. Barbara left very clear instructions and was very responsive and helpful. We felt so lucky to stay here and would highly recommend it!

Barbara was extremely helpful and clear with all instructions which made check in / check out seamless. The place was super clean and somehow even better than the photos! Daniel, the groundskeeper, was also extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the surrounding area and extraordinary plant life on the property. He recommended some local mercados (markets) and attractions. The property was so inviting and enjoyable that we wound up spending a large portion of time there. Of the many Airbnbs I have stayed at over the past few years (there have been so many!), Barbara’s home in the mountains outside Oaxaca City is one of my favorites. The house is lovely in every way and is in a very peaceful spot with a spectacular view (from the patio) of the valley and town below. If you like to cook (I do), the kitchen has everything you’ll ever need, so it’s perfect for longer term stays. For a family or group of friends it would be ideal, but of course you will need a car because it’s a fair distance from the city. But if you want a peaceful, incredibly comfortable place to relax in the mornings and evenings, this is the spot. I made a fire one night in the fireplace on the front patio and it was divine. I highly recommend this, although you should gather up some wood on your outings because there are limited quantities on the property. If you choose to stay here, I’m sure you will treasure the experience.
