Situated on two acres of native plants in the foothills outside Oaxaca City, the Casa is a birder’s paradise. This stunning work-or-play retreat is fully equipped with all the amenities. Enjoy breathtaking views, superb birding, and driving access to outings, cultural activities, good hiking, and great food. Charming tranquility and privacy, only 35 minutes from downtown Oaxaca. ¡Bienvenidos! Spacious and inviting, combining the charm of life in a lively mountain village with reliable wifi and easy access (by car) to the delights of Oaxaca City, Casa DaviLinda is the perfect home base for your visit to Oaxaca. Built to be the family home, la Casa is both comfortable and beautiful, offering all the amenities for an enjoyable stay, in a residence graced with art from around the world and set in a wild garden of native plants in the foothills of the Sierra del Norte mountains. Our shaded terrace provides spectacular views of the entire Etla Valley, not to mention the silhouettes of the Monte Albán pyramids on a hillcrest across the valley. Take a closer look at the ruins, or the abundant birdlife, with the house binoculars. Downtown Oaxaca City is only a 35-minute drive away, and from our front door there are beautiful hikes through our rural community and into the mountains. The region's boundless artisan communities, markets, archeological sites, fabulous food, and natural splendors are within easy reach. House Overview: The Casa has a flat, open floor plan, and wonderful views of the Oaxaca Valley from every window. There are two bedrooms: one is the master suite; the other, with its double bed and antique fold-out table, can be either a bedroom or a second office. There are two full baths (one en suite and the other adjacent to the second bedroom); living room; dining room; office; spacious kitchen; laundry room with washer and dryer; partially shaded front porch; and shaded back terrace. The house is equipped with wifi fast enough for video conferencing and remote working; a TV screen for streaming; and a safe for valuables. The Casa sits on the rise of two acres of tended native plants, cactuses, and trees, and attracts a wide variety of bird species year-round. As is typical in the village, the property is fenced and gated. House details: The fully equipped kitchen, with its colorful Mexican-tiled walls, was designed to suit our family of cooks. You will find all the appliances you could want, including a coffee maker, blender, Cuisinart, waffle iron, salad spinner, toaster and toaster oven, baking pans, muffin tins, griddle, and plenty more. The master suite has a full-size bed, an airy dressing room, and a master bath with a tub and shower equipped with grab bars. The solar-heated water tank is backed up with gas. The house is fully accessible to a walker or wheelchair, via the brick pathway from the garage. The guest shower has a small bench and is big enough for a wheelchair. Casa DaviLinda’s art collection reflects some of the family’s interests and travels: you will find Turkish rugs, Spanish pottery, Moroccan brass, and Mexican handicrafts of all types. Abby, one of the owners, is a glass artist, and her stained glass windows add splashes of jeweled sunlight throughout the house. The bilingual library of books includes novels, histories of Oaxaca and Mexico, birding guides and other nature guides, local maps, cookbooks, and art books; plus a selection of reference works for scholarly research.
Casa DaviLinda is exactly as described. You are surrounded by a beautiful feast for the eyes inside and out. I brought some easy to travel with art projects of my own to enjoy while staying. There is also a huge collection of books on a variety of topics. The location is removed from the noise of the city. If you don't rent a car you'll get a lot of exercise exploring the neighborhood on foot. You can also get around with the local Moto-taxis/tuk tuks. Trips into the city will be more of an adventure with several options for getting around. Casa DaviLinda has an amazing view of the surrounding mountains and valley. Every day I discovered something new to enjoy & inspire.
This home is a very special place indeed. In addition to being a beautifully designed adobe-styled casa, it is an homage to Mexican art and artists who are featured throughout. It's clear the owners hold a deep respect for the craftsmanship and heritage of the area as it's reflected in the construction of the home, the terra cotta tiling, the planters/sculptures that adorn the property, and the historic textiles, ceramics, and glasswork inside. It was a joy to be surrounded by such beauty! There are too many neighbouring towns to mention, but the area has a rich history of craft: weaving, ceramics, embroidery, wood carving, natural dyeing, all within an hour or so of the house. One of the highlights of our visit was touring the area with the house manager, Jessica, who has so much knowledge of the crafts and culture of the area. She and the home owners were attentive and professional, making us feel right at home. A heartfelt thank you to all of you for sharing this special place!
This home was a pleasure to stay in, clean and comfortable. It was just as described. It was an endlessly interesting place to engage in the daily village life. We found sufficient markets nearby for fruits and vegetables. There’s a great mercadito nearby where delicious food can be had or for take-out. You won’t go hungry! Also, it’s a great spot for birders, with many to see from the patio alone, and many more on walks in the hills above. Deborah was very responsive and had many helpful suggestions for just about everything we could need. We would definitely love to stay here again, but next time longer!
We stayed 5 weeks. The casa and grounds are extremely beautiful: amazing views of the mountains, gorgeous plants, and architecture. The house is spacious and comfortable with great wifi for video calls, a well-equipped cook's kitchen, a lovely bath, & art and books. There are great hiking trails only a 30 min walk up the hill! To truly enjoy the area, you will need a car. There are minimal services: no restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping, etc nearby. Pick up groceries before you arrive! The handyman Sebastian was most helpful with everything you could ask for, and the cleaning lady Emma is a gem. The hosts always respond quickly and are very nice. Just so you know, there are many rules for the property. Also, the privacy of the space was disrupted by the gardener being on the grounds 3 days/week for eight hours each day, and unfortunately, he looked into the windows—and there are a lot of windows. Even though you're in the country, surprisingly, there is a lot of street noise
(Read on for details about birding, below.)
Eco-tourism: In the hills above the village, visible from the house, is the community-managed eco-preserve. At La Mesita you will find hikes, guided tours, a butterfly garden, ecological demonstration stations, and art by local artisans -- and beautiful vistas from the valley overlooks.
Local activities, outings, and amenities: Two blocks uphill from our house is the Santa Cruz municipal plaza, where the produce market (with cheese, chocolate, and other goods) sets up twice a week. A 20-minute walk down the hill will bring you to the town center of neighboring San Pablo Etla (plaza, church, school, library, corner stores) and to the delicious homemade food of the Mercadito, open seven days a week. (Note: in a village in the foothills, everything is either up- or downhill -- there is very little flat walking!) Driving, we are 20 minutes from the ruins of Monte Albán, 35 minutes from the Oaxaca City center, and 15 minutes from the cultured pueblo of San Agustín, with its beautiful Centro de Artes and public swimming pools.
Birder’s paradise: The mountain chains of two continents converge in the Oaxaca Valley funneling migrating birds through a relatively narrow area, making this central valley a birder’s paradise. On an average day you can spot 20-25 bird species from our front porch, with as many as 40 spotted in one short neighborhood stroll. During the Christmas bird count we have logged 90 species in a day.
The neighborhood encompasses a variety of habitats. The village is still quite rural, with many fields and farm plots; in a ten-minute walk from the house you might see vermilion flycatchers, groove-billed anis, orioles, and even elegant euphonias. Kiskadees, hummers, dusky flycatchers, and the endemic collared towhee abound. A slightly longer walk will take you to one of the local reservoirs to see water birds (herons, dabblers, egrets, sometimes kingfishers, and more). Hike or drive up into the oaks and pines of the mountains to hunt for redstarts, warblers, and more (including a chance to spot the bumblebee hummingbird, if you drive up high!).
You will find information about local bird guides in the Casa Welcome Book. Most years there are monthly opportunities to participate in bird banding, a citizen science initiative led by experts, at the Ethnobotanical Garden in the city.
We have plenty of hummingbird visitors, and we encourage you to keep the hummer feeders filled!
Ambience: Small town life is both tranquil and active. Nights can be clear and starry; or they may be slightly hazed with smoke from agricultural burn piles, turning the sunsets a gilded fuschia. Sunny afternoons you may hear nothing but the hum of the carpenter bees in the rafters and distant burros braying. Other times you’ll enjoy a full symphony of background sounds: roosters; truck gears grinding; vehicles honking to announce the passing of the tortilla seller or the knife sharpener; fireworks; the playing of music, both live and recorded; dogs sharing opinions; and all the sounds of nearby farm life. Be prepared for intermittent noise! It’s a sensory tapestry. We love it and we hope you will too.
Renting a car, hiring a driver, or taking a taxi are probably the most convenient ways to get around, and our house manager or we can provide recommendations. Sometimes our manager himself is available as a driver. (A taxi downtown is around 300 pesos, as of summer 2022.) Within the village everyone takes moto-taxis. It is also entirely feasible and a fun adventure to use public transportation to visit the city or outlying areas. To get from the village to the city, typically you take a moto-taxi down to the highway and then catch a colectivo (shared taxi) into town. We will be happy to provide details.
自我介绍
Hi there! I live in the US and love to travel just about anywhere. I’m an adventurous eater; I enjoy getting to know people; and I also like doing my own thing. I speak fluent Spanish and bad French. At home in the Pacific Northwest I work with kids, families, and literacy; grow a slightly wild garden; read a lot and make music; and spend as much time outdoors as possible. I live in a 100+-year-old house painted in warm colors that remind me of my other home in Oaxaca, Mexico.
