The Skipper's Hut is located in the heart of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park in the beautiful Braes of Balquhidder and situated on a wooded knoll overlooking Loch Voil. The hut in its earlier days was used by the skipper of the estate's electric launch for trips on high days and holidays. The Hut is constructed from old Russian Pine with a pantiled roof. The interior is wood lined, painted in a light airy colour and practically furnished. There is a mezzanine floor with a double mattress and a window overlooking the loch and a 'stargazing' skylight. Underneath the mezzanine is a double bed. Both beds have plain white cotton bedding and extra blankets and cushions. There is also a comfy sofa and kitchen table and chairs. The cooking and washing area and shower and toilet are accessed from the outside deck within an adjoining wooden shed in a simple 'glamping' style. The hut is heated by a wood burning stove. There is also an electric heater.
Beautiful cabin, loved the mezzanine with views through the trees onto the loch! Peaceful location. Lovely host, really friendly and helpful during our stay :)
What a quaint and comfy little hut ! We were delighted to spend a day there. Fiona is very friendly and is always there for us if needs be. She recommend places for us to hike around the village and spot some red deers (we saw a few dozens the next morning). The place in itself is incredible and unabled us to see the Scottish wildlife from up close (we saw some squirrels as well eating from a little house on the trees next to our window). Would 100% recommend.
Balquhidder glen is an area of outstanding natural beauty within the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. It is mainly a hill farming and forestry area however with superfast broadband going to every property in the glen, many people live here now with a very wide variety of jobs. Balquhidder is also within the geographical area known as the Beadalbane . The Braes of Balquhidder has been described by the Celts as a “thin place” where the boundary between Heaven and Earth is very narrow. It is steeped in history and has a very close association with the Clan MacLaren and Clan MacGregor. The well known outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor lived in this area and died at Inverlochlarig. His grave is in Balquhidder Churchyard. There is a book in The Skipper's Hut where you can read more about him.
For places to eat and drink see our guidebook.
You can hire bikes, kayaks/canoes, and paddle boards from “Roll Outdoors”. It is a good idea to pre-book equipment or sessions.
For those guests who are travelling by public transport it can be possible to pick up ebikes in Callander from Roll Outdoors and return them at the end of your visit. The Skipper's Hut is situated just off the Sustrans Cycle Route 7 and The Rob Roy Way.
There are many outdoor activities you can do in the area:
Fishing
Kayaking/Canoeing
Golf
Hill walking
Cycling/mountain bike trails
Wild swimming
Photography
The easiest way to get here and to go sightseeing is by car. You can cycle around from here if you bring your own bikes......however...
It is possible to get public transport to Mhor84 at the bottom of the glen (just off the A84)
Another option is to arrange the hire of ebikes from Roll outdoors in Callander. They can be picked up at their base in Callander and you can cycle up Sustrans National Route 7 cycle to Balquhidder and The Skipper's Hut. The bikes can be returned when leaving from Callander to pick up buses for the next part or your homeward journey.
Although we are in a very rural setting, we are only about one and a half hours drive from both Edinburgh and Glasgow airports.
