Dowd House - Meredith Lodging Prepare for a cozy and wonderful stay in Dowd House, a historic oceanfront home with two living areas steeped in classic Oregon Coast cottage detail. Perched on a high cliff above the southern side of Alsea Bay, you’ll have sea views from the home and panoramic outdoor views of the south and north sand spits, Alsea Bay and the Pacific. You’ll love the eclectic, old-world details of the cottage, from beamed wood ceilings, antique furnishings and an amazing rock-and-shell-embedded wood-burning fireplace hearth with clever sailing ships on the mantle. Fully equipped kitchen, along with a second living room, making this a great home to share with another family. There’s one ground-level bedroom with a nearby bath, and two upstairs sleeping areas, each with its own staircase. One side has a bath and two bedrooms, a queen and an ocean-view king with a charming twin bed with a window to the sea. The other side is a wood-lined queen suite with a private ocean-view deck. Located down a lane in a quiet residential area, Dowd House is just up the hill from Waldport, walking distance to the Hilltop Cafe-Bistro, and an easy drive to all the fun activities in Newport or Florence, with all the stellar scenery in between. BE AWARE! It is not all that it appears to be. Lets start with the good points first. Pro: 1. Nice view of the ocean and surf. 2. I do think the cleaners tried to clean the house. Con: 1. Smelly old house. It felt like I was walking into a used bookstore with a mold problem. 2.Broken window in the what seems to be the master bedroom. The casement window closing mechanism was missing so the window basically opened as the wind blew. 3. Non functioning gas fireplace. There was a wood burning fireplace another section of the house that worked but no kindling was available. 4.Two of the four burners on the stove did not function. There is another very old kitchen but we did not use it. ( I believe this house used to be a duplex at some point since it has to kitchens and two fireplaces.) 5. Stained, dirty carpet. 6. The kitchen overhead light was not operational . 7. Very poor communication with Meredith management company over other issues I will not even go into here. Basically if you're only interested in the view, go for it but if you're interested in staying in a nice place that doesn't give you the Willys every time you sit down I would definitely pass on this rental. There are too many other rentals out there with responsible owners who are interested in making their guests stay comfortable.
We had a great stay! It was very spacious with amazing views! Not one of the best stocked pantries. But it was okay for us! The enclosed balcony was great too. Surreal views!

Fantastic location. Great views. Interesting shelving and artwork. Was a fun house to explore. However, outdated with issues mechanically with the home. The pictures are not accurate. Hard to heat the 2nd living room during these winter months. Cleanliness is not there. Appliances are very old and not reliable. Was stocked fairly well. Had all we needed. Just very old and needs some updating. Still enjoyed ourselves very much. The back deck was fantastic on the warm days.
Beautiful and rustic. The beach is a very short walk away, and the house has a perfect view of the ocean. Really enjoyed our stay.
