Staying at Aliko’s has been an experience of a lifetime. I recommend staying a month if possible. The idyllic, slow paced, close community feel seems impossible to describe. Akiko herself is literally a national treasure. This location offers an experience way off the beaten path where you’ll lose the “tourist” label and will be known as a “guest of Akiko.” Sure enough, Akiko has a steady flow of guests who return regularly, sometimes annually! The standard island attractions are not a long drive off, and I do recommend renting a vehicle even though some of the best days are spent right here-waking to KoleKole, Tuesday market, Yoga Dojo, Zazen, chatting with Akiko, and pitching in around the property. I had a wonderful time in the community vibe with the other guests. If you’re thinking about spending some time here for an alternative to the tourist experience, just do it. Thank you so much Aliko!
I absolutely loved my stay at Akiko’s bnb. Extremely peaceful area and accommodations. I could have stayed much longer and hope to return. I loved being involved with the community and participating in the morning meditations. It is a beautiful place to go inward and slow down. The night rains were magical and the sunrises on the porch was a highlight to everyday. Akiko is so kind and vibrant. I learned so much during my short stay and made a few friends along the way. Highly recommend for the solo traveler looking to connect to nature and community.
How can I put my stay at Akiko’s into words? Simply, it was as profound as it was unexpected. It’s hard to say what’s more impressive, the land of Hakalau or it steward, Akiko. Watch both though and there are countless lessons to be learned. I came across the listing by happenstance a week before my stay on the big island after a previous accommodation canceled on me. I can’t thank them enough! I read the glowing reviews expressing the benefits of staying here longer, and extended my ten day trip to three weeks. After I arrived, I made it a month, and am so grateful I did. This is not simply a place to rest your head (although I haven’t felt as centered and relaxed as I did during my stay). It’s also an opportunity to learn about the spirit of aloha from an elder from the islands who demonstrates a way of being imbued with service and stillness, as well as plenty of movement and joy. If your reading this, my offering is to change “if” to “how long.” Mahalo!
truly magical and unique place. especially if travelling alone, u r made feeling very welcome and part of the community. Akiko is such a welcoming, calm, and deep person, i am really happy our paths crossed. the place itself is very relaxed, shared kitchen gives opportunities to connect with other guests and have meaningful conversations. very interesting book and magazines collections and tranquil surroundings. and bon dance, best yoga i have had and farmers market. thank you Akiko!
I had the pleasure of staying at Akiko's bnb for a full month and am so glad I found this spacial place, hosted by a very special woman and guide. It was so peaceful and restorative to say the least. Akiko creates a space that is nurturing and happens to be just what you need to move inward for healing. In the middle of the rainforest, you will find yourself able to connect not only more deeply with yourself but also with the land, the community and the ancestors. Make the most of your stay at Akiko's, join the yoga and humbly go to the daily meditations, weekly farmers market and more. Open you heart, you and will find yourself making some deep connections with fellow travelers. Akiko, so much gratitude for holding this space for so many and showing us the way.
