Set in attractive arable countryside only a few miles away from popular Aylsham and Blickling Hall, The Granary in Oulton is a unique Norfolk home that offers memorable stays for up to five people. With three separate bedrooms and two bathrooms, this former granary has been tastefully furnished to ensure that guests can enjoy relaxing breaks in this traditional building. All of the main living areas are on the ground floor, meaning you can enjoy the cosy sitting room with doors that lead out to the charming courtyard garden if you want to bring in some sunshine and fresh air, or you can gather around the dining table for six. The well-equipped kitchen features an oven, induction hob, Nespresso coffee machine, and a full complement of kitchen and tableware. Whether you're enjoying a morning cup of coffee or preparing a delicious meal together, this space is sure to look after all of your needs. Outside, there is a pretty courtyard garden that often is a super suntrap. Set up with outdoor furniture and a charcoal barbecue, this is a lovely, quiet space to enjoy a good book or a nice meal. To the front of The Granary there is ample allocated parking for two cars, allowing you to come and go as you please while exploring the rich history of Blickling Hall or the deep history coast. Situated on a working arable farm, The Granary offers views over the meadow and other grazing pasture, providing glimpses of majestic deer, playful hares and elusive foxes. In the early evening, it's always wise to listen out for Barn Owls as they patrol the hedgerows and fields. The high-pitched screeches are unmistakeable! Additional Information: The Granary is not dog friendly. Travel cot, stair gate and highchair available, by prior request. Bedding is hypoallergenic synthetic with white cotton sheets. Bedroom two can be made as either a twin or as a super-king, upon prior request.
The Granary is only a few minutes drive from Aylsham, a traditional unspoilt market town. Aylsham's market place, surrounded by 18th century houses, reflects the town's prosperity from the cloth trade from that era. The town was famous for its linen and textiles in the 1300s before it went on to become a major wool and textile producing area. Today, the picturesque market place holds markets on Mondays and Fridays and there are plenty of shops, pubs and tea-rooms. Aylsham is the northern terminus of the Bure Valley Railway, a narrow-gauge steam railway which takes you through the countryside to Wroxham, gateway to the Norfolk Broads, where you can hire boats. The station also marks the start of the Bure Valley Walk, a walking and cycling route alongside the railway line. If you visit Aylsham during the August bank holiday, you can look forward to the annual Aylsham Country Show. The Weavers Way trail, from Aylsham to North Walsham, follows a disused railway line and is a great off-road route for walking, cycling and horse riding.
Also nearby is the National Trust's Blickling Hall, a sensational Jacobean house, with wonderful gardens, which was home to the Boleyn family from 1499 - 1505. It is believed that Anne Boleyn's ghost still roams the hall! The landscape, with its hedges and narrow tree-lined lanes, has changed little over the centuries and is quintessentially Norfolk. In the grounds, stands the beautiful 14th century church of St. Michael and All Angels. The Hall's grounds are surrounded by countryside, perfect for picnicking and exploring!
There are beaches a plenty a mere twenty minutes drive away. Overstrand is a pretty, sleepy coastal village just two miles south of its larger neighbour, Cromer, and during the Victorian era was known as 'the village of millionaires' and a particular favourite holiday destination for Sir Winston Churchill. Still retaining its old fashioned seaside charm, this charming village hasn't changed too much. There is now a busy Cliff Top Café, popular with locals and visitors and the beach is sandy and if you fancy the walk along the beach or coastal path to Cromer you can reward yourself at the end with a drink at the beachside Rocket House Cafe, while you watch the fisherman and tide come and go.
The family orientated traditional seaside town of Cromer has an award-winning pier, beautiful beaches with rock pools, cliffs and great sandy expanses, and great independent places to eat out in town. It is also becoming Norfolk's surfing hot spot - lessons and equipment hire can be booked at Glide Surf School. There is an excellent museum telling of the maritime history of the town. A visit to the impressive medieval church can include a climb up the tower for great views. Or for a lively day out Amazona Zoo is a must. Cromer can also boast ‘Britain's Great Barrier Reef' – the Cromer Shoal Chalk Bed, the longest in the world at 20 miles long. This chalk shelf is what makes for particularly flavoursome, tender and fragrant crab, for which Cromer is famous. The Pier has a Pavillion Theatre, the only one of its kind in the country, which stages traditional variety shows and live music events. With plenty of carnivals, markets and festivals, there's always something going on in and around Cromer. Also heading west of Cromer is the Norfolk Coast Path, with linking buses so long coastal walks from here are very popular.
Norwich is only twelve miles away and Felbrigg Hall National Trust estate with its gorgeous gardens, grounds and stately home is a short hop in the car.
