Discovered by local travellers when the world was locked in, Poombarai is unlike your go-to weekend escape. 20 km from Kodaikanal, a U-turn away from the famous 10-mile road, this little hamlet remained shadowed by popular photo spots until 2020. But with carpeted fields of greens, forested hills on all sides, and a hub of brown-topped houses in the centre, Poombarai is worth exploring in its own right. While holidaying, a stroll through the village's narrow alleys will treat you to shy, smiley faces and a riot of colours splashed on the tiny houses. That’s not all, Poombarai also takes care of the adventurer, cultural buff, and the sucker for landscapes in you with easy access to scenic lakes, ancient sites, and sweeping valley views.

From Kodai Road Railway Station: ~102 km (~3 hr); Take a direct cab to Zostel Poombarai (Kodaikanal) for ~3500 INR.
From Palani Railway Station: ~89 km (~3 hr); Take a direct cab to Zostel Poombarai (Kodaikanal) for ~3500 INR.
From Madurai Airport: ~157 km (~4 hr); Take a direct cab to Zostel Poombarai (Kodaikanal) for ~5000 INR.
From Kodaikanal Bus Stand: ~23.4 km (~1hr); Take a direct cab to Zostel Poombarai (Kodaikanal) for ~1300-1800 INR.
Alternatively, take a bus to the Poombarai bus stand for ~22 INR per person. From the Poombarai bus stand, take a shared cab for ~INR 250, a private cab for ~INR 500, or walk ~4 km to Zostel Poombarai (Kodaikanal).
Note: The last 4km stretch of the road is bumpy and unmetalled. Guests are advised to drive carefully or ask the help of a skilful driver.
