This two bedroom, one bath (shower only) furnished 1940's cedar-frame cabin is nestled in a grove of old growth fir and cedar along the banks of Little Smith Creek. It is historic, rustic, full of character, yet comfortable and clean. There is NOT any telephone, cell service, Broadcast TV, or cable. There is a lot to do! It's like camping, only better. Come stay in our furnished 1940's cedar-frame cabin nestled in a grove of old growth fir and cedar on the banks of Little Smith Creek. It is historic, rustic, full of character, yet comfortable and clean. It has two bedrooms, a bathroom (shower only), kitchen, and living room. We are located near Highway 12 in Syringa, Idaho. There is not any telephone, cell service, Broadcast TV, or cable. There are many amenities, but expect to do without, too. Inside there is a small cowboy kitchen w/ an electric apartment stove/oven, a ten cubic foot refrigerator, Hamilton Beach Brew Station, cooking/baking utensils, dining ware, and dining table. Each bedroom has one full-size bed. There are two electric heaters and a propane fireplace. It was built cottage style, so the ceilings are about seven feet. Maid service is not provided or is extra. Don't be fooled by the low price. This is a nice, clean, relaxing place. Safety equipment is important and includes a smoke detector, carbon monoxide detector, emergency light and first aid kit. The cabin has books, movies and games for recreation, mostly on Idaho history. Nope, there’s no television or news. Your cell phone won’t bother you here, I promise. No internet either, but there are emergency messaging services usually available. Outdoors, there is a campfire & barbecue with a picnic table next to the creek. S'mores are a staple! Enjoy a game of horseshoes. The Clearwater National Forest is adjacent with hiking, wildlife viewing, and hunting. A cool breeze blows down the creek almost every afternoon. The 1.1-million-acre Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness is close. The historic Lewis and Clark Trail is nearby. The local highway is a very nice drive or motorcycle ride. Fishing and rafting (class 1-5) are available on the Lochsa or Middlefork of the Clearwater Rivers. The Selway River (7 miles) and Selway Falls are also close by. It is not unusual to have whitetail deer, quail, rabbits, or turkeys in the yard. Elk, Moose, Bear, Wolves, Cougar, are all close-by. The rivers hold different species of Trout, Steelhead, Chinook salmon, and Whitefish. You might see Beaver or Otters. Bald Eagles, Osprey , and Canadian Geese fly over and nest here, too. Unfortunately despite on-going efforts, we sometimes have raccoons, yellow-jackets and other less desirable wildlife, so be ready for life in the great outdoors. Due to wildfires in 2015, the roof received water damage from continuous sprinkling. We have replaced the roof and one section of ceiling. Some rooms show water spots on the ceilings. We will repair these ceilings at out earliest opportunity. The cabin is in Game Unit 12, but unit 10A and 16 are accessible. Steelhead fishing is closed May and June. Spring/Summer Chinook Salmon seasons are to be announced, usually in April, May, & June. The closest public transportation is between Lewiston and Kooskia. US 12 is the main highway. Year-round services are 15 miles. There is a seasonal dinner cafe within walking distance, and another cafe seven miles to the east. Although my name is Glen Scott Swearingen, I have always been called Scott. Please address all your inquiries to "Scott."
The cabin was just as described, Scott was helpful, made us feel right at home and went out of his way to find additional local information to assist with our stay. We will be back again!
Scott and Pam were very gracious hosts. Very proactive and made sure everything was to our satisfaction. Such a beautiful place and peaceful. Sitting by the creek was my Happy Place.
Great little place. All the cool stuff here from days gone by. The area was excellent and has many hidden gems off the beaten path. Take a week, bring a good four wheel drive and hit the Lolo motorway(this closely follows the nez perce and Lewis and Clark’s trails) or take a ride up to the beaver ridge lookout. Catch some cuttthroats in the red river or the endless supply of other rivers. If hiking is your game this area has more trails than you could walk in 10 years. We rode 32 miles on the Lolo motorway and saw 1 car! Can’t ask for better than that.
That cabin in the mountains from days gone by but without having to pump water or use an outhouse - this is it!
Syringa, Idaho is a group of about twenty homes. It is in a sylvan mountain cove on the alluvial plain of three creeks, Little Smith Creek, Smith Creek and Syringa Creek running into the Middle Fork of the Clearwater River within a mile or so. The highway, US 12 which was not paved until 1962, separates the town from the river. Lewis & Clark Trail Cabin is on a "Dead End" road which helps to limit traffic and increase solitude and privacy. The area was once the location of a lumber mill, which is closed and used for storage. The mailing address for Syringa is Kooskia, Idaho 83539. Kooskia is actually 15 miles to the west.
The area borders the Nez Perce Clearwater National Forest. The area was first settled by homesteaders and foresters. There were cedar sawmills here once, although they are long gone, there is an industrial area used mostly as storage.
Syringa, or Mock Orange, is the Idaho State Flower.
We're not in the middle of nowhere but one can see it from here ...
The nearest public transit runs from Kooskia, Idaho to Lewiston. It is the Appaloosa Express operated by the Nez Perce Tribe. It is very economical. The nearest airports are Lewiston, Spokane, and Missoula.

My wife Pam and I are retired country people who worked in public safety directly responsible for service and protection of the public. We began to rent out our Syringa cabin to earn a little extra money. Now we just like to see people enjoy our western, pioneer themed vacation spot. We are all about customer service and promoting Idaho. We try to deliver a quiet enjoyable relaxing time. Just tell us what you want. We enjoy anything western, historical, or natural. If you like Idaho, logging, mining, trapping or cowboy history, Lewis & Clark, or John Wayne, you will enjoy chatting with us. This is an excellent area to study. I can loan books on all of these along with flora and fauna. Or, if you like, you can be left to yourself.
