Woolacombe is a seaside resort on the coast of North Devon, which lies at the mouth of a valley (or 'combe') in the parish of Mortehoe and the village dates back to the Stone Age. Once a quiet fishing hamlet before the elegant Regency buildings sprang up to accommodate fashionable visitors who took to sea bathing, today sees surfers with colourful boards mastering the rising swells and enjoying the pleasant bohemian air with interesting shops and Surf Schools. So it is a popular destination for surfing and family holidays and is part of the North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Surfers feel at home in Woolacombe with challenging waves, tubes, and space to ride their boards, landlubbers take to the coastal walks along the Southwest Coastal Path which generously rewards with views that film directors only dream of smaller visitors can climb aboard the miniature train or choose one of the nine holes on offer at the Pitch ‘n’ Put just behind the sand dunes. So, don't forget your surfboard, walking boots, and oxygen as the views will take your breath away.
Blessed with a three-mile golden, sugar soft sandy beach, that's home to an International Sandcastle competition, the gentle sweeping curve of the bay is back dropped by sand dunes, and at the southern end the breath-taking headland of Baggy Point points out to sea, whilst at the northern end the dramatic headland carpeted in wild heather is Morte Point. The beach has over the years continuously been recognized as one of the best beaches in Europe. It won the title of Britain's Best Beach in the "Coast Magazine Awards 2012" and was awarded the same prize of Britain's Best Beach in 2015 by TripAdvisor, also ranking in their polls as 4th in Europe and 13th best in the world. The beach water quality is monitored regularly by the environment agency and meets its highest standards.
This eye-catching RNLI lifeguarded beach offers a perfect day out for all families and children of all ages. As well as a great family day out, this is a ideal location for those who want to take the plunge and learn to surf. The iconic multicoloured beach huts are available for rent in advance.
Middle Beach & Marine Drive Beach nestled in between Putsborough and Woolacombe Beach, take a stroll through the golden sand dunes to find a perfectly distanced spot with plenty of room to hang ten. Even in the busy summer months, Middle Beach is a perfect location for families, who prefer a quieter beach experience.
Putsborough Sands Beach is located at the very southern end of Woolacombe Beach. You can enjoy the best mix of dramatic cliffs, rock pools, and sandy bays. This beach is the perfect location for families who like to explore and relax. Also, a highly popular location to walk (especially with dog walkers), as many visitors park up in Woolacombe and take the 5-mile stroll along the beach and back. Best of all is, as you reach Putsborough Sands, a lovely café awaits serving divine Devonshire cream teas.
Take a stroll across the esplanade and find this little hidden gem of Harris, Gin and Shellsborough. This location is perfect for all families with a sense of adventure. Get your buckets and nets at the ready and head on down to a beach that offers a wonder of surprises the high tide left behind.
Grunta Beach is accessible only at low tide, so make sure you check the times before setting out, this tiny little cove is supposedly so called because of a shipwrecked on the beach full of pigs. The locals supposed heard the grunts and squeals of the ship's cargo and the name stuck!
Barricane Beach is sandwiched in the middle of the many cove beaches along the esplanade is the prettiest one yet. The sea is clear, the view is extraordinary and rockpools are aplenty. Barricane Beach is perfect for families with older children who like to explore. Throughout the spring and summer months, a small café will be craned onto the beach. Serving delicious baguettes throughout the day and their famous Sri Lankan curry by night. It certainly will be a meal with a view!
Combesgate Beach is located between Grunta Beach and Barricane Beach you'll find this hidden gem if you follow the sweeping steps onto this quiet rocky beach. If you are looking to go shell hunting this is the greatest beach for you.
Information for Dog Owners:
Woolacombe Beach:
Dog Friendly all year round! Some restrictions apply during the main season - Dogs are not allowed between the rocks at the north end of the beach and the stream from Good Friday or 1st April (whichever is earliest) until 30th September. This is a very small area in comparison to the size of the beach. Dogs must be on leads from the stream to Mill Rock from the same dates but may be exercised without restriction from Mill Rock onwards. (Restrictions in place from 9am-6pm).
Barricane Beach:
Dogs are allowed but must be on leads when the café is in situ (usually March - September). Please check the signs as you go on to the beach.
Combesgate Beach:
Dogs are not allowed on the beach from 30th April - 30th September.
Grunta Beach:
Dogs are allowed on the beach at any time of year.
Rockham Bay:
Currently inaccessible to people and dogs!
Putsborough Sands:
Zone A (south of steps): No dogs allowed from 1st April - 30th September, Zone C: Dogs allowed.
Lee Bay (Between Woolacombe & Ilfracombe):
Dogs allowed.
Croyde Beach:
No dogs allowed in the main season. dogs allowed 1st October - 30th April.
Saunton Sands:
Dogs are allowed, with certain designated restrictions in the main season, like Woolacombe.
There are plenty of lovely dog walks for you and your dog to enjoy apart from the beach!
The South West Coast Path runs in both directions from Woolacombe; to Croyde via Baggy Point, and to Lee and Ilfracombe via Morte Point. These sections for the coast path are managed by the National Trust. Dogs must be kept on leads as there is often livestock kept there and be aware of cliff edges and steep drops.
Potters Hill and Woolacombe Downs above the beach is also another favourite walk with stunning views of Woolacombe Bay, Baggy Point, Morte Point and Lundy Island, Again, please keep your dog on a lead as the National Trust have Exmoor Ponies grazing there, as well as sheep and cattle.
The Old Railway Line that runs down to Ilfracombe from the top of Woolacombe (start at either Willingcott or Lee Bridge) - this is perfect on a hot day as parts of the walk in the shade of the trees.

By Car - M4 and M5 (leave at Junction 27.) Straightforward but pick your time carefully on Saturdays/Friday nights during school summer holidays.
Nearest train station to Woolacombe Bay" is Barnstable. Then maybe take a "Taxi from Barnstable to Woolacombe Bay" which takes no more than about 20 minutes.
There is ample parking with a choice of beach car parks in Woolacombe, and additional roadside parking for shorter stays. Mortehoe has a car park in the centre of the village.
Lots of eating places e.g. pubs, restaurants and Cafes.
When it comes to Woolacombe supermarkets and shops, there is a selection to choose from. Beyond supermarkets and food shopping, there are a number of smaller shops in Woolacombe, moments away from the beach. Spend a few hours browsing the number of locally owned shops Woolacombe has available; grab all of your surfing equipment with plenty of surf shops like Shore 2 Surf.
15 minutes down the road in Ilfracombe, you can take your pick between Lidl and Tesco superstores to find everything you need. And if that doesn’t satisfy you, a mere 12 miles away in Barnstaple you’ll find every other supermarket from Sainsbury's to Asda. Also in Braunton there is a large Tesco's. Most major supermarkets also deliver to Woolacombe, so you can order a food shop to be delivered if you prefer.
