Fig & Bay Cottage sits on the brow of a hill, 500 meters above sea level, between two Devon villages – Kilmington and Shute. Kilmington offers two good pubs both within a 20 minute walk that serve food and have outdoor eating areas. Millers Farm Shop is a mile away and offers an extensive range of fresh local produce including organic fruit and vegetables, meat, fish and has an excellent selection of local wines. You can also enjoy guided tasting sessions of award-winning English wines at the Lyme Bay Winery just 5 mins from the cottage.
There are many local walks from the property, and both Kilmington and Shute Woods have permissive and public pathways. Breathtaking views along the Axe Valley to the sea can be enjoyed a moment’s step away from the property.
There are several easily accessible local beaches including Lyme Regis (17 minutes), Seaton (17 minutes) and Seaton Hole (excellent for swimming and rock pooling), Charmouth for fossil hunting (16 minutes) and Branscombe beach which is dog friendly (23 minutes). The historic fishing village of Beer is 20 minutes away and has a great range of pubs, cafes and a sheltered shingle beach.
Of local historical interest there is the Armada Beacon in Shute Woods, which has stunning views of the local coast (5 minute walk) and the National Trust property Shute Barton (10 minute walk) which has open days throughout the year.
The nearby town of Axminster has a large supermarket (6 minutes), fishmonger, butcher, restaurants & cafes, including the Waffle Community Café.
There is a large Tesco superstore in Seaton (20 minutes). Bridport offers an excellent range of shops, antique markets, art galleries and independent stores and a Waitrose (25 minutes). The cathedral city of Exeter is under 40 minutes’ drive and offers an extensive range of leisure activities, shops, restaurants and nightlife.
For families, Wildwood at Ottery St Mary (25 minutes) has animals, including wolves and bears and a Viking village to explore. The Axe Valley Wildlife Park (5 minutes) also is great for younger children, and the Seaton Tramway (8 minutes) offers a trip in style to the beach, and runs a programme of events and activities throughout the year. Further afield Crealy Theme Park (35 minutes) and Paignton Zoo (1hr) offer fun filled family days out.
For garden enthusiasts Burrow Farm Gardens (9 minutes) has 13 acres of lovingly designed gardens and stunning views and their Tea Room does an excellent traditional Devon Cream Team. Pecorama at Beer (20 minutes) combines award winning gardens and sea views with a miniature steam railway for enthusiasts young and old.
For dining there are many local options to suit every taste. Mark Hix’s restaurant the Oyster & Fish House in Lyme is highly recommended for fresh sea food. Lyme’s Fish Bar on the Beach does excellent fish and chips. The friendly Poco Pizza in Lyme Regis has an outdoor terrace with beach views. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s River Cottage is 10 minutes away. More locally, Khushi Kitchen offers authentic, locally sourced home cooked Indian food for collection in Kilmington (2 minutes).

Fig & Bay Cottage is situated in open countryside a few minutes drive from the A35. The cottage shares a gated drive with the main house and there is parking for two vehicles on the drive.
The nearest train station is Axminster, which has direct trains from London Waterloo. There are taxis available at Axminster station and it is a 8 minute drive to the property from the station.
Exeter airport is 40 minutes from the cottage and Bristol airports is 1hr 25mins.
