Lochearnhead is a small village in Scotland's first national park with around 250 inhabitants. #lochlomondandthetrossachsnationalpark
Loch Earn is a narrow freshwater loch in an area steeped in history e.g. there is evidence of a mesolithic burial chamber, an ancient (Crannog) dwelling house on water utilised between the Bronze and Iron age, a Pictish stronghold and the feudal estates of clans MacGregor, MacLaren and Stewart. Did you know that Loch Earn has a seiching tide? Nothing to be concerned about. It is a subtle moving of water from one end to the other over 16 hours. We can explain when we meet you.
Other must sees are The Falls of Dochart at Killin and Rob Roy MacGregors burial place in Balquhidder.
Watersports: Loch Earn was famous in the hey day of water sports championships. The Lochearnwakeschool keeps the tradition alive. Book waterskii and wakeboard sessions with or without tuition. Hire ringo rides, single and double paddle boards and kayaks along with wetsuits. The shop also sells equipment plus hot beverages and ice cream in summer. They operate April to October and are only 150 metres from Briar Cottages gates.
Hotels and eateries: There are two hotels in Lochearnhead operating from Spring to winter. Booking is advised. Last food orders are usually 8pm. They are within 200 metres of Briar Cottaes. We can recommend other eateries in the east end of Loch Earn, Killin, Callander, Comrie and within a couple of miles at Balquhidder Station and Turn off.

Art Installations: The BLiSS trail is an award winning art installation trail linking Lochearnhead with neighbouring villages St Fillans, Strathyre and Balquhidder. Two of the installations are in Briar Cottages garden and they light up at night. You will find the QR code sign posted near them to discover over 20 other pieces from quirky signs to sculptures and architectural installations and with a link to the Geotourist audio story and map.
Cycling and Walking: Sustrans NCR7 cycle and walking path has an entrance from Lochearnhead at the Craggan road, signposted off the A84 by a BLiSS trail metal sculpture of a West Highland Terrier (designed and created by TV blacksmith artist Kev Paxton of ArtFe.) The path also joins up with The Rob Roy Way and links with The Glen Ogle Trail. Discover the delightful off road walking and cycle path whether you turn right over The Glenogle Viaduct towards Killin or choose left, past a real beaver lodge, towards Balquhidder, Strathyre and Callander, with some excellent cafes and restaurants along the route. Cyclists note that we are recommended by Trust In The Park and have a tool box and portable bike repair station should you need assistance. We can also recommend professional repair centres and cafe's with bike stands.
Munro's: You will be spoiled for choice with walking routes accessible in the area however there are also nearby Munro's to climb. Ben Vorlich and Stuc A chroin are directly opposite the cottage and you can access them from the south side of Loch Earn.
Golf: At the East of Loch Earn you will find St Fillans Golf club. This is Sandy Lyle's favourite 9 hole inland course. Not only is it immaculate thanks to an ex Gleneagles ground keeper, the members will welcome you with open arms as will the on site catering owner in the club house.
Wildlife: The most popular wildlife creatures in Scotland can be spotted in this area. You might be lucky or you can hire local professionals who know where to look. There are also some delightful animal parks like Auchingarrich, Blair Drummond Safari Park and Briarlands Farm for little ones.
Shop Local: We recommend that people shop local and can advise on local food products as well as gifts, bakers, butchers, fruit and veg, fish, pharmacy, creative arts and crafts and more. Just ask.
Whisky: We are surrounded by distilleries - the oldest one at Glenturret near Crieff, Deanston at Doune, Dewars Aberfeldy. There is also a wide selection of whisky and gin in a shop at Tyndrum...ask us where it is and about the tasting experience offered in Callander.
Folklore: We can tell you area stories of fairies, a water spirit and other mystical magical tales that have been passed on for generations.
Parks: Ask us about childrens parks from the village to St Fillans community designed park and further afield
Briar Cottage: Our thatched cottage that you will see on arrival adds charm to the village. It was inhabited by the same family of McLarens for 200 years, all documented in books. The McLarens would have paid tenancy fees to The Earls of Breadalbane Campbells who owned Edinample castle opposite amongst others. If you are interested we will let you see the original cruck timber framed ceiling under the thatched roof and share tales of its origins and tenants. Just ask.
The BLS Highland Games takes place in Lochearnhead on a satruday in July every year. One of the best small traditional games in the area. Run be talented locals, there is something for everyone here. Clan chiefs MacGregor and McLaren host diaspora in their respective tents. Other local clans and chiefs are invited to the March of the Committee, parading around the field in their clan colours and feathers to mark the start of the exciting programme.

We have enough parking for 2 cars at the cottage and a boat trailer on the grounds. It is best to travel here by car as a train plus bus journey is not impossible but complicated.
