Lai Chi Wo is one of the oldest and best-preserved Hakka walled villages in the northeast New Territories. The over 300-year-old rural settlement saw its heyday in the 1950s, when nearly a thousand villagers lived in more than 200 houses and terraces among the surrounding hills. Despite departure of many villagers at start of 1960s, the village was abandoned until the universities, NGOs, charities trust, business corporations, local villagers and community farmers adopt a collaborative model to revitalize the village and was awarded UNESCO’s prestigious 2020 Special Recognition for Sustainable Development award for promoting cultural heritage conservation.
Located in Plover Cove Country Park, Lai Chi Wo is also part of the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark due to its special geological significance as well as natural and cultural richness. Its coastline has the largest population of Coastal Heritiera and White-flowered Derris in Hong Kong and was designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1979. It is a scenic area with a diverse ecological environment and rich biodiversity, including the endangered Yellow-Breasted Bunting songbird and the rare White Dragontail butterfly.
