Nice cottage with seaside decor, beautiful and lovingly-maintained garden. The shepherd’s hut is brilliant and a masterpiece of small- space living! Parking is a challenge, expect to have to park further up or down the road. Generally the house was squeaky clean but I think the cleaners ran out of time in the kitchen (they fled as we arrived) and there was some mess left there. The bath and shower work OK but have limited space (low ceiling), I think a tall man might struggle! Kids loved Walmer Castle just down the road.
Overall the stay was great and the location of the cottage is superb, but be aware this cottage is unsafe. The steep staircase leading to all of the bedrooms was never mentioned in the listing even though it poses a significant risk. The top part of it leads to a very small space with doors to all of the rooms and a bathroom. At the very least it requires a permanent source of light because it is almost impossible to navigate this space in the dark. The light switch is located on the stairs, so there is no safe way to turn on the lights if you are going from one of the bedrooms to the bathroom. Additionally, at the very bottom of these stairs there is a hard wooden bench, which makes the potential incidents even more dangerous. There was an incident during our stay, and although the injuries were not too severe, it is important to rethink the design of the stairs adjacent spaces because as of now they are not safe.
The location of this cottage was lovely. Size of the cottage was lovely & overall a nice place to stay. But as several other people have advised it does have some work needed on it which I felt made the price we paid on the high side. Two people fell on the stones on the way up to the Shepherds hut. The Stones are dangerous. The bathroom & Toilet windows didn't open. The cutlery wasn't the cleanest, but mostly the hard floors were dirty. I walk around all day bare footed & I did the same here (only inside) & mine & my daughter in laws feet were black. The floors might have been swept, but certainly not washed. On first impressions a wonderful place to stay, but there are disappointing areas which took the shine off the stay & didn't make it good value for money.
The cottage is lovely overall but for the cost there were basic things that should have been better. These included a very overgrown garden which blocked the pathway upto the Shepard’s hut which made it difficult and dangerous to access. The pebbles on the pathway were also loose and easy to slip on so think this needs looking at for overall health and safety. General Maintenance also need improving such as kitchen drainage, shower dripping and toilet window unable to open. The towels provided also had an unpleasant smell so we had to use our beach towels we bought with us.
Vince Cottage and the Kingsdown Shepherd’s Hut are nestled in the pretty village of Kingsdown on the East Kent coast. The beach is a few minutes walk away, where you will find The Zetland Arms, a lovely beach front pub that looks out onto the white cliffs. The village also has two pubs, a butchers and small local shop and post office. A short drive away, you will find Deal and Walmer in one direction and St Margaret’s Bay and Dover in the other, so plenty of things to do, places to explore and history in which to immerse yourself.
Deal is only a 10 minute drive away, and there are also bus routes to Deal.
Deal has a train station, with main lines to London (which takes just over an hour) and other seaside towns across Kent.
Deal also has a bus station with main routes to Canterbury, Sandwich and Dover and a taxi rank.
