Situated in the popular and picturesque Isle of Purbeck, Smugglers Cottage is within close walking distance of the South West Coastal Path. It is also very well located for a visit to Corfe Castle or the beaches of Studland and Swanage. The cottage is located on the Jurassic coast in a conservation area, and the village and surrounding area are steeped in history. Whether you love to relax on the beach, explore on foot, or by bike or bus, Smugglers Cottage is in the perfect location for you. Smugglers Cottage is a unique 18th-century, 2-bedroom, 3-story, cottage with many original features, including a flag stone floor. It is complimented by modern luxuries, including gas central heating, a washer dryer, dishwasher, smart tv's, and a Nespresso coffee machine , to ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible. Due to the age of the property, the wood panelled staircases are narrow, and the lathe and plaster ceilings get lower the higher up you go. The top floor of the cottage is within the roof space, so taller guests will need to mind their heads on the beams and doorways. *Please note; the bathroom is situated on the top floor and because of the low ceilings the bathroom comprises of toilet, basin, bidet and shower over bath only.* Although no standing shower is available, guests have found the bath and a few bubbles to be a very relaxing end to the day. It makes a change from the busy lifestyle that many have at home. After all you are on holiday! Next to the bathroom (on the top floor) and across a small landing is the twin room (or king room on request) comprising of 2 full sized 'Emma' single beds and mattresses. Although it has a low beamed ceiling, the room is reasonably sized and is very quiet. Go down the narrow flight of stairs to find the double aspect sitting room which has views to the church opposite and Ballard Down in the distance. There is a 43 inch LG smart TV for easy access to radio, terrestrial TV, or your Netflix and Amazon accounts. There are a variety of lighting options in this room to suit your mood, ranging from lamps to dimmable LED downlighters. There is also a USB socket for device charging. Adjacent to the sitting room is the 'Captains Quarters'. This is the main double bedroom and has a double bed with Emma mattress, hanging space, and drawers with hairdryer provided. There are USB and micro USB sockets on either side of the bed for device charging. This room also benefits from an electric modern wood burner effect heater for ambience and a boost of heat should you need it. This bedroom is on the front aspect of the cottage and although situated on the village High Street, is silent at night. Down the stairs to the ground floor is a newly fitted kitchen with all modern amenities. It extends into the dining area, making it a great social space. There is a 43 inch LG smart HD TV in this area and USB socket for device charging. There is an electric wood burner effect heater in the fire place to add extra ambience and a blast of heat if required. Out of the dining area through the rear stable door, it leads up 3 steps to a pretty private south facing courtyard garden. This part of the garden is secure for dogs. It is also a lovely space for having a coffee or breakfast and making plans for your day. Through the gate, there is an alfresco dining area ideal for an evening meal or drink or for star gazing under the cosy blankets provided. There are solar powered festoon lights, outside double sockets, and many beautiful plants in the garden, including jasmine, ferns, passion fruit, figs, rose, and an apple tree. The garden comprises a pretty, winding Purbeck stone path with places to sit and a shaded area under the pergola, which leads to a dedicated off-road private parking space for one vehicle at the end. The Purbeck stone path is typical of its age and can be uneven in places, so care must be taken. The parking space is accessed via the no-through road at the rear of the property. Alternatively, there is ample on-road parking outside the front of the house and opposite, next to the Church. Smugglers Cottage currently has no Electric Vehicle (EV) charging point and on road charging could be tricky. St Michael's Garage at Harmans Cross which is less than 10 minutes away has 2 BP EV points. Dorset Council provide EV charging points at many of their car parks including Swanage and Wareham. The cottage is surrounded by National Trust sites that also have EV charging such as Studland and Corfe. Many local pubs and hotels cater for EV. Perhaps a full charge on the way into Purbeck and then leave the car at the cottage and make the most of the excellent bus service?
Attractive well thought-out and equipped cottage. perfect as a centre for local walks.
Smuggler's Cottage is a real gem. Beautifully presented and charming with every little detail you could wish for a comfortable stay, in any weather! The cottage is furnished to perfection, a very well equipped kitchen and lovely comfortable beds. We loved the garden for eating outside and it's very peaceful. Tina was an excellent host with great communication throughout. Highly recommend a stay here to explore the delights of Dorset.
A wonderful quirky cottage with a wealth of amenities and very generous extras. A great place to do SW coastal path walking.
I’m full of compliments for Smugglers Cottage and Tina as a host. The house has everything you could possibly need as a place to relax, cook and have a great nights sleep in. We came with our two kids and they were fully entertained with the toys, books and games in the house. The welcome box was a wonderful, seasonal surprise. Everything has been thought of and the attention to detail is perfect. The town of Swanage is charming and picturesque. We did a lot of things in three days, and a highlight was the amazing fish and chips and the Fish Plaice.
Smugglers Cottage is in the centre of the popular village of Langton Matravers. From the cottage it is a 2 minute walk to the Kings Arms pub. The Kings Arms is in the good beer guidebook 2023 and serves good pub food. It often has events at weekends such as themed buffets and live music.
Smugglers Cottage is just over a mile to the South West Coastal Path and Dancing Ledge.
Smugglers Cottage is 200 years old, and as the name suggests, it has close links to smuggling. Smugglers would land at the inlets south of the cottage, such as the nearby Chapmans Pool and Brandy Bay. The story is told that the south facing windows in the top floor bedroom would have lanterns lit to signal the smugglers that the coast was clear. Smugglers would head up over the hill into the village, through the cottage and out to the Church opposite where goods were hidden in the Church roof and tower. This became apparent when the Church roof and tower became unstable, possibly due to the weight of the hidden treasures. Barrels of spirit were also taken to the Kings Arms to be decanted into bottles and sold.
Today, there is a Smugglers trail that can be walked from Smugglers Cottage around the surrounding area. One of the many walks that can be easily accessed directly from the cottage.
The cottage and surrounding area are easily accessed by car, although some of the lanes can be quite narrow and twisty. Many of the car parks on Purbeck are run by the National Trust, and in Swanage, the Justpark App can be used if you don't have change. Parking is extremely cheap through the winter period though car parks can get very busy in the summer.
If you prefer to not have to worry about driving or parking, then the nearest bus stop is less than 2 minutes walk away. The regular bus service will take you into Swanage and continue onto Bournemouth via the chain ferry at Sandbanks or in the opposite direction towards Corfe, Wareham, and Poole. Sometimes, it is an open top bus.
Smugglers Cottage is in a great location for both on and off road cycling. There are some challenging climbs as Langton Matravers village is set on top of a hill. There is bike hire available at Norden near Corfe.
If you prefer your exploring to be done at a slower pace, then the village and immediate area are very popular with walkers because of the southwest coastal path, many public footpaths, beautiful scenery, and views.
