We give high marks for the location and for cleanliness. The unit is nicely remodeled, and though minimally equipped with furnishings and cooking supplies, had comfortable beds and what we needed. We enjoyed the close proximity to Grayson Highlands State Park, where despite iffy weather we enjoyed the Twin Pinnacles, Rododendron, Horse Trail North, Haw Flats and Split Rock, and Rock House Ridge Trails. (We were told Cabin Creek Trail would be muddy.) We were also just a 45 minute drive away from Damascus and the beautiful Virginia Creeper. House has no central air but was equipped with 3 space heaters that kept us warm enough on a chilly weekend. Surroundings were very quiet and peaceful.

This is a great place to stay for the great outdoor adventure. We did the Va Creeper Trail one day on our bicycles and floated down the lazy New River the next day. Went to the top of the mountain and walked on the Appalachia Trail. Had a great meal at the Railroad Cafe. Biscuits n gravy was great at the gas station in Damascus and the Mi Casa restaurant in Independance was very good. This location is in the middle of it all.

I have family in the area so I have stayed at a handful of places in the area. This cabin is by far the cleanest and most comfortable place I have stayed. The beds were so comfortable and the cabin had everything we needed. We saw bunnies and deer while we were there. The road is a quiet and beautiful place to walk. When we visit we always bike the Creeper Trail. We always start in Whitetop and bike to Abington (we stop for pictures and ice cream along the way). We catch a shuttle back to our car from Abington. If we don’t bring all of our bikes then we rent bikes from the multiple bikes shops in Abington. The cabin is a mile from Grayson Highlands State Park where we love to go see the wild ponies-usually on the Application Trail and play in the creek on the Cabin Creek Trail. There are festivals at the park and places to gather as a family. Flossie recommended a great caterer who dropped our family lunch at the park. Hunt Brothers pizza is available at Whitetop Food and Gas.

Lovely mountain retreat! Host was very responsive and left recommendations for the local area on where to eat and where to go for activities. Most importantly, home was very clean and as described! Would love to come back again and enjoy the mountains and fresh air. Thanks for an excellent stay Flossie!
