I really enjoyed staying at the Essex Inn. I wish I had had an extra night there so that I could’ve explore the area a bit more. I hope to go back! Beautiful inn, gorgeous backyard, fantastic restaurant across the street, delicious breakfast, the history, the river… Really wonderful combination.

Our stay in the Exxex Inn was absolutely wonderful. Greg and Jacquie, the host and hostess, were there to greet us on arrival. Greg is very congenial and spent a lot of time talking with us, telling us about the history of the Inn, as well as some history of the community. Also, we discussed his personal efforts of restoring the building, as well as the soon to open 1710 Tavern across the street. And, we discussed his chef responsibilities, from the wine served on our arrival to the exquisite three course breakfast he prepared and served. Oh....the breakfast...absolutely delicious. First - Fresh, still warm, crousants that he baked. We've traveled extensively, including in France. These were absolutely the best crousants we'd ever had. Second - Pear poached in wine-cinnamon reduction and fresh berries. Third - Spinach and goat cheese omlette with bernaise sauce, fried potatoes, toast. VERY much worth the stay, more of an experience.

We loved this spot! It was a great midway point for us when traveling from DC to the OBX. Loved the comfy beds and breakfast! Can’t wait to return and stay for more than just one night!

I had some business in Tappahannock, so we decided to make a mini-getaway of it. We chose the Essex inn on a whim, and we’re so glad we did. The owners are fabulous caretakers/curators of this cool historic home. They were a pleasure to talk to. Room, house, and grounds were great. Owner recommended dinner at Relish, and we had a great meal there. We definitely would like to visit again.
