Hi, I am M.J., married to Suzanne, we have three children and live in VA on the Eastern Shore about an hour north of VA Beach. I like to travel with my family, garden, and kiteboard. in the spring of 1999, I convinced my young bride, Suzanne, that a hole would be torn in the universe and life as we knew it would cease to exist if we didn’t buy a waterfront farm on the Eastern Shore of Va. She reluctantly agreed and The Laughing King Farm was born. In the spring of 2005, I penned an 18-page handwritten love note to the same young bride attempting to persuade her to uproot our young family of five (Soup, Sarah, Jake, Tommy, and me) from our comfortable suburban life in Vienna Va. to said waterfront farm on the Eastern Shore of Va. Again, she reluctantly agreed and we have never looked back. The Laughing King Retreat is on land that was once the capital of the Native American kingdom of Debedeavon, dubbed “The Laughing King” by the English Settlers that first inhabited this part of Va. in the very early 1600’s. The king was said to have been a really fun guy who smiled and laughed all the time and was very hospitable to his new friends. He taught them the best fishing and hunting spots what to eat and where to find the best food. We have been entertaining guests from all over the world for years as amateurs and in the spring of 2018 we decided to turn pro. The Laughing King Retreat with its sweeping Chesapeake Bay vistas, 60 acres of organic farm, our southern style home, vintage Airstream, and cottages are now available for your enjoyment, and in the spirit of our namesake, Debedeavon, we strive to make everyone feel like an old friend and we will do our very best to make you feel warm and welcome as well as smile and laugh all the time.
