There are also many beautiful walks from the door. (12 munros-mountains over 3000 feet- within one hour) eg one walk leads through the Fairy Glen up to the heathery mountains with their spectacular panoramic views, (shared with hundreds of deer and, in spring and early summer, the liquid calls of the curlews). This is a wonderful place to just relax in the sunroom or the hot tub, from which the northern lights are quite often seen in the Autumn and Winter, listening to the river bubbling by. Why not ask our Estate chef for homemade cheese scones, or to provide supper for your arrival complete with champagne or to cook for the freezer in advance of your stay? We can buy your shopping, babysit your children, collect you from the airport, do your laundry, arrange clay pigeon shooting, or take you on a Landrover wildlife safari. In winter, ski at Glenshee, the most extensive ski area in the UK, (40 kilometres of pistes) 35 minutes’ drive away. There are lots of activities and sights to see on the Estate and in the local area including the King’s holiday home, Balmoral Castle, Glamis and over 200 other castles, great restaurants, smokeries, cashmere and tartan shopping and distilleries such as Macallan, Glenlivet and Grouse. There is such a profusion of wild flowers that part of the glen is a wildflower reserve. Our own wild raspberries are so famous that the Royal Botanic Garden at Kew collected some of our seeds in 2019 from bushes within 600 metres of the cottage. They are now stored in the World Seed Bank in an ice cave in arctic Norway, to be used in the event of a possible climate disaster. We found and reinstated the original fireplace and renovated the shutters and wood panelling using reclaimed timbers from the area, installed low voltage downlighters on dimmer switches and Scandinavian levels of insulation in the roof. The fully-equipped Poggenpohl kitchen and the sun porch have lovely views from the window of the River Isla flowing past the garden. On the ground floor the romantic king-sized bedroom (with ensuite bathroom with a large, modern walk-in shower) has working shutters, walk-in wardrobe and an early 19th century original cast iron fireplace with views to the river from the bed. The sunny 17th century sitting room has a wood burning stove, an enormous sofa with lots of cushions, antique tables, free wifi, TV/ DVD. The south facing sun porch has plenty of space for dog beds, wellies and walking boots. Upstairs there are 2 sunny south facing partially timbered twin or zip and link kingsize bedrooms overlooking the garden and a bathroom with a titanic-sized newly renovated 19th-century bath tub. The sitting out board games area is an excellent place to keep the children entertained on a wet day. The private hot tub overlooks the river. The flower garden, with native roses and honeysuckle, is surrounded by an ancient stone wall, and a beech hedge with a gate onto the river bank. The large lawn is ideal for games (provided). The entire garden (half an acre) is enclosed for pets with a games room equipped with table tennis, table football, etc. There is a sheltered south facing seating area beside the river with table, chairs and a BBQ.
