Check out the Cliveden Historic Estate. During the Battle of Germantown in October, 1777, a wounded British soldier etched this image in his own blood in the remaining moments of his life. The image is believed to be that of a girlfriend or loved one. The portrait was not disturbed by the Chew family and remains an iconic image at Cliveden, and can still be viewed on the wall of the second floor bedroom near where the solider once lay.

This historic mansion is the site of the Battle of Germantown, fought during the Revolutionary War. What makes this location so special is that seven generations of the Chew family lived here from 1767 to 1972. Benjamin Chew and his descendants keep copious records, correspondences, financial ledgers and other documents that are still available today for research purposes at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. The documentation of their slaves lives are especially important and unique.

Cliveden, also known as the Chew House, is a historic site owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Built as a country house for attorney Benjamin Chew, Cliveden was completed in 1767 and was home to seven generations of the Chew family. It was a Northern plantation that was in use until the 1970s and site of the Battle of Germantown, which Washington lost, thus allowing the British to march and occupy Philadelphia. This home hosted the area’s wealthy residents, as can be seen by their signatures carved into the window glass.
