The Zeche Zollverein - also called "Eiffel Tower of the Ruhr Area" - is Essen's landmark and was an active coal mine from 1851 to 1986 in Essen. It is today an architectural and industrial monument, which offers guided tours, museums, art exhibitions, concerts, gastronomy and in the winter season ice skating pleasure for the whole family. The coking plant Zollverein and the mines 12 and 1/2/8 are UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2001.
