Home to the last remaining native Key Deer, the endangered knee high species. If you love nature and wildlife, this is the place to go.

The National Key Deer Refuge was established in 1957 to protect and preserve Key deerand other wildlife resources in the Florida Keys. The refuge is located in the lower FLorida Keys and currently consists of appx 9200 acres of land that includes pine rock land forests, tropical hardwood hammocks, fresh water wetlands, salt marsh wetlands, and mangrove forests. These natural communities are critical habitat for hundreds of endemic and migratory species including 17 federally listed species such as Key deer and Lower Keys Marsh rabbit. Don't forget to Visit the Natl Key Deer Headquarters to meet the rangers. In the close neighborhoods you can routinely see the deer in people's yards and on the streets so drive slow. Stop and have lunch or dinner at the No Name Pub. Pizza is very good!
