To keep you safe during Coronavirus we now have individual shower and toilet facilities for each tent and separate fridges too. Therefore there is plenty of space to keep separate from each other and maintain a safe distance, whilst enjoying a carefree holiday. There's only the Safari Tent in the meadow and the Yurt nestled in to the woodland. So, if you book them both you can have the entire site to yourself! Click My Profile to see Safari Tent details. 2 adults, 2 children. Nigel and Liz run this small site because we want others to enjoy this beautiful piece of Somerset. The tents are far enough away from each other and from the house that you don’t need to worry about us, but we are near enough if you need anything. To see details of both the Safari Tent and the Yurt, please click on My Profile picture at the top of the page. During Coronavirus we will respect social distancing and keep our distance from your party throughout your stay. In fact, other than a brief moment during check in when we can show you round and explain things from a distance, there should be very little need for any contact whatsoever. If you feel more comfortable, we can also wear gloves and masks. COVID prevention measures - we've built a new, separate shower shed. To keep you safe during Cornavirus we now have individual shower and toilet facilities for each tent and separate fridges too. Therefore there is plenty of space to keep separate from each other and maintain a safe distance, whilst enjoying a carefree holiday. There's space for a max. of 2 adults only and 2-3 small children in each plus acres of room if you want to pitch an extra tent for the kids to sleep in, using your own bedding, for a small extra charge, (please just ask us first). The Yurt is comfortably furnished with a double bed and 2 small singles (suitable for young children only). All bedding, blankets and equipment you might need are supplied (not towels), so just bring yourselves and your clothes! However, whilst COVID continues to affect everyone please bring your own towels. DriftAway may not be at the glamorous, luxury end of the market, but everything you need is all here and its clean and comfortable - that's the way we like it and we hope you do to. We encourage visitors to cook over the outdoor fire pit or on the small wood fired stove. But we also provide a compact gas cooker too and there’s a small sink / washing up bowl in each tent. There's also a proper sink up at the shower house shed to make washing up a little easier. Lighting is from candles and battery / solar lamps as there’s no mains power. However, we have provided a power point along with your own fridge in the shower house shed, about 20m away and we do provide a cool box in the tent and ice packs. It's always a good idea to bring your own torch too. The shower house shed houses the off-grid shower and is dedicated to users of the Yurt only. It's no power shower, but it provides warm-to-hot showers. Our lovely loo cabins house a very clean chemical toilet for your own private use. Staying at DriftAway Camping is about relaxation, enjoyment and fun in a secluded, private setting. We like to encourage an appreciation of the natural beauty around you, whilst also having fun. The meadow and woods are a registered Wildlife Reserve and abound in a diverse range of marsh, heath and meadow plant life and trees. What could be better than sitting round a camp fire cooking your own food, enjoying good company and contemplating the stars…? Come and find out.
Great place to just go and relax. We stayed in the yurt and the woodland surroundings are lovely. Everything you need is there to cook and relax. We will be returning next year.
This is our second visit, and we have fallen in love all over again ♡ Liz is the perfect host! Super friendly, helpful, welcoming, and makes excellent food! The site is absolutely stunning, peaceful, and serene! Our boys absolutely love Driftaway, and we will absolutely be visiting again xxx
Highly recommend for an incredible stay. Great value for money, and gave the kids freedom to explore and have fun. Loads of games provided and loads of space for climbing trees, making fires. Information was provided on loads of different activities around the local area so made a day outbreally easy to plan. We will be staying again.
Driftaway sits very close to where the 3 counties of Somerset, Devon and Dorset converge. All are home to a diverse and fantastic range of locally produced foods – just there for the finding and enjoying.
But at a more basic level there are several supermarkets, butchers and bakers just 5 mins away by car (10-15 mins on bike) in the local town of Chard, along with the usual selection of shops restaurants and take-aways you would expect in a small town.
In addition there is the Tatworth post office and village shop just a 4 min drive away.
The nearest laundry is 7 mins drive away on the outskirts of Chard – unfortunately we are unable to provide a washing machine at this stage.
We are 10 miles from the Jurassic coast and within easy driving distance of Glastonbury Tor, Wells Cathedral, Wookey hole and Cheddar Gorge, not to mention the fabulous landscapes of Dartmoor and Exmoor.
There is a huge diversity of things to do and see with historical, adventurous, culinary and relaxing options all within reach. Why not try coasteering or the 'Go Ape' tree top adventure; Crealy Adventure Park is 35 mins away, or you can visit the Winsham Deer Park or Ferne Animal Sanctuary.
Lyme Regis and the Jurassic Coast line are a short drive away as are the market towns of Axminster, Crewkerne and Ilminster. Whereas Bristol, Exeter, Taunton, Dorchester and Yeovil are all within comfortable driving distance and there are many historic houses and gardens to visit in the area, as you can see below.

It's all about the wonderful 'outdoors'. It's where I spend as much of my time as possible. So being able to allow guests to come and enjoy what we think is a beautiful little site in south Somerset is what it's all about. There are many definitions of glamping and they do not all mean total ‘luxury’ or glamour. We believe there should be as much ‘camping’ as ‘glamour’ when one is glamping. There is a whole range of glamping offerings out there and Driftaway happens to pitch itself at the ‘camping in comfort’ end of the market. Driftaway is not a posh, boutique glamping experience. We focus on ‘back to basics’ and keeping the camping in glamping. The site is intentionally ‘low impact’. To begin with we only had 2 portaloos and a shower on site and that was it. Since then we have added better, separate toilet sheds, a shared fridge freezer, solar lighting, electric power points and an outside sink to help with washing up. The fact that this is not all under cover with concrete paths between everything is a matter of choice and not neglect! Driftaway has grown organically; we do not have the funds (or the desire) to put in more and more building and development projects. The beauty of Driftaway is its simplicity.
