Cae Canol Mawr is a fantastic place high up in the Ffestiniog mountains and well worth the slightly tricky drive up the farm track to get there. We can particularly recommend the nearby Snowdonia Slate Trail and wild swimming in Llyn y Manod - the water is very clear and not too cold. The property has everything you might need for your stay and Caroline is an attentive host who kept us well informed.
Nestled in a picturesque location, this cottage initially promises a 5-star experience, but regrettably falls short due to several significant issues. While I've never left a review lower than 5 stars before, I feel compelled to provide an honest assessment. The cottage is in dire need of a thorough cleaning and maintenance overhaul. There are large clusters of black mold present which can be smelt soon after entering and poses potential health hazards. Additionally, the hot water works intermittently, two of the radiators don't work and the shower drain is clogged, all of which significantly detract from the comfort of our 2-night stay. Accessing the cottage is a nightmare and will cause some damage to low vehicles. The request for extensive cleaning a day before checkout, despite a paying a hefty cleaning fee, feels disproportionate. The fee should be waived considering the mold. Hopefully the host will address the trail hazards, reconsider the cleaning fee and tackle the mold.
