Alton is a thriving market town with some independent shops, a good range of coffee shops, a weekly market and plenty of good quality pubs. It is an ideal base for walking and cycling in the South Downs National Park or north over the Weild. There are local parks, ponds and wild areas just a few minutes walk away and Jane Austen's delightful cottage at Chawton is one mile west. The railway station is also home to a vintage steam railway - the Watercress Line.
Great days out can be had within a hour's drive at the historic cities of Winchester, Portsmouth and Chichester. Local attractions include
Bird World, Go Ape, Intech Science Centre, Legoland, Thorpe Park, Marwell Zoo, Paultons Park, HMS Victory and Windsor Castle.
We are just 30 miles from the sea and beaches, with ferries to France, Channel Islands and the Isle of Wight. We have maps showing the local named walking routes, including The Hanger Way, The Writers Way, The Shipwright's Way and many more. The lovely National Cycle Route 224 crosses our road; you can join it to go west and north on Route 23, or cut across to Route 22 to go east, or south to the coast, all through glorious countryside.

We are only a 10 minute walk into town and a 25 minute walk to the train station which has half hourly trains direct to London Waterloo from early morning to almost midnight. Frequent buses run to Winchester, Farnham, Guildford and Basingstoke. Waitrose is by the train station; M&S and Sainsbury within a 10 minute walk of our house.
