If you are looking to drop out on your vacation to Hawai’i, this is the place. Pahoa is a half hour drive from Hilo and this property, with its fruit trees and gardens, is perfect for that. Hugh and Elvie are superior hosts. My husband and I were treated to fruits, first morning’s breakfast, baked goods, and even a Christmas meal provided by the two. Hugh greeted us on our first day, regaled us with stories and showed us such kindness that we instantly felt “at home”. In the mornings we were visited by chickens, at night the birds and coqui frogs made their evening sounds. We would make daily trips to explore the island. There is so much to see and do that having a car is essential. This was ideal for two, with a bus adding a second bedroom for family to stay a day or two. We enjoyed our stay immensely and were pleased with the robust internet.

Hugh and Elvie have been the best hosts we could possibly have imagined! From giving us the largest avocados I've ever seen, to cooking us homemade deserts. Their always joyful presence and great vibe has made our stay unforgettable! The space itself is an absolute paradise! The house has all the necessities you could ask for, and is very comfortable.  Both of us work remotely and the internet is plenty fast. Overall, this stay has been one we will never forget, and I definitely hope to return one day!

Gracious hosts, a beautiful house and property in a quiet area, which we enjoyed going back to after being in busier parts of the island. The nearby volcanic coast is dramatic and great for exploring. Mackenzie State Recreation Area has some amazing hammock or picnic or hiking spots and tide pools along the trail heading southwest. Thank you!

Stay at Hugh & Elvira's place was one of the best in my life The house is magical, open, free, and transparent, with lots of windows; beautifully integrated into the surrounding nature. It's also very private, you don't see any other houses from your wonderful 180 degrees porch. The view is beautiful - lots of monkeypod trees, some fruit trees, many birds and colorful geckos are always around. The bed is large with a comfy mattress, waking up there is an experience of pure beauty. The kitchen is very well equipped. Hugh was definitely the kindest and the most caring host I've ever had in any country and in any house. He offered me fruits from his property, shared occasional tasty dinners, picked me up at Pahoa, took me the grocery store, and helped me with my bike and binoculars. I'm looking forward to coming back to this place in a year or two! Thank you!

We were guests at this location for 5 weeks. It began to feel like home - the difference, there were wonderful people (Hugh and Elvie) that took care of everything. They regularly introduced us to new fruits fresh from trees on the property. Provided, homemade desserts and too many other homemade foods to list. Truly a cultural experience. It was just a short, interesting drive to various beaches on the pacific. Black sand, lava cliffs and hot pools to name a few.c strongly recommend.
