The Cathair Dhubh Estate is tucked into the rugged Sutherland coastline on the NC500 between the villages of Lochinver and Clachtoll. Nestling in the heart of the spectacular Assynt countryside, it is a haven for wildlife lovers, hikers, fishermen, photographers and outdoor enthusiasts, not to mention those families looking for white, sandy beaches and crystal blue waters. At Cathair Dhubh Estate the views are simply amazing! Bring your binoculars and you could be watching whales, basking sharks, porpoises and dolphins all from your window! The Estate houses five lovely, self-catering cottages which are listed on Airbnb. Orchid cottage is a cosy semi-detached property looking south over beautiful Achmelvich Bay and to the distant mountains beyond. The cottage has 2 bedrooms; a double and a twin. It has a good sized family bathroom. There is a fully-fitted kitchen, incorporating an oven, hob and microwave, together with a fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer. The open plan lounge and dining area provide a comfy place to relax and is equipped with satellite TV and DVD player and CD radio. We also have high speed broadband. There are patios leading to outside seating where you can experience the breathtaking views.
Orchid Cottage is completely idyllic. Self check in was so convenient and easy, especially after travelling with 2 restless dogs for over 5 hours. The cottage itself is immaculate, the vibes are so cosy and peaceful. Isolated in their own little compound these cottages truly are worth the travel. There are great trails in the surrounding area down to the beaches and up to the clifftop to watch the sunset, manageable for most capabilities, especially the 15 minute trail to Achmelvich and Vesteys beach which we walked daily. From booking Kate was so informative, providing details of the surrounding area, the easiest travel route to the cottages and also food and drink recommendations. There was also information regarding the nearest veterinary clinics which we thought was so attentive. From our window we saw plenty of sheep, birds and deer in the evenings and the clearest night skies! We couldn't have asked for a better break, topped off with some of the best brownies we've ever had!
Orchid cottage was warm and cosy and well equipped. It boasts stunning views.… we lost hours watching the ever changing light and weather conditions. A perfect place to relax and forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Tranquil setting away from the hustle and bustle. Properly is well appointed with nice views onto Achmelvic Bay. Lovely walks nearby. Kate responded quickly and communication and instructions were good. I would recommend Katie's property to other users.
My family had an incredible stay. Just walking along the coast either direction is stunning, and only twenty min drive to the start of Suilven which we did for a day adventure. Really well equiped kitchen. Good wifi. Kate was very responsive and and addressed issues as fast as she could. Thanks!
Fabulous Location. Arrived after dark and woke up to the most incredible views that photographs can not do justice too! One of best beaches in area is a short walk and close enough to climb iconic Suilven for added local options. Cottage had everything you’d need for a self catering family break.
Cathair Dhubh looks out over Achmelvich Bay and is set against an awesome backdrop of sandstone mountains, with names that trip from the tongue of any walker – Quinag, Suilven, Canisp. These ancient hills are formed from some of the oldest rocks in the world and create a timeless wilderness.
In the hills around the estate, wildlife and birdlife abound. Black throated divers, otters, red deer, seals, porpoise and sea birds are but a few of our neighbours. With a touch of extra vigilance, you may even happen to spot minke and pilot whales, orca and sea eagles – binoculars are a must!
The coastal path from the glorious sandy shores of Achmelvich passes through on its way to the abandoned millstones at the old water mill at Port Altan ‘Abradhan. Here you will find another beautiful, secluded cove to explore minutes from your front door. If you continue along the path, you'll see the iconic silhouette of Split Rock and then the creamy sands of Clachtoll beach, another Assynt treasure which also plays host to the annual Sand Sculpture competition - a brilliant day out for families.
At the entrance to the estate, lies Loch an Ordain allegedly haunted by the mythical Black dog of Creag an Ordain – a two-headed, horned beast belching fire, with a human face and eyes that glow like burning peats – you might not find him listed in many of the nature books but he abounds in local legend!! For those anglers undeterred by the prospect of the Black Dog, the hills behind Loch an Ordain cradle a network of lochs and lochans teeming with brown trout. Some lochs further afield, even have migratory Sea Trout and Salmon passing through them – there is indeed a wealth of fishing opportunities.
The picturesque fishing village of Lochinver is about four miles away and provides a good range of local amenities, including two grocery stores, a butcher, a post office, 24 hour filling station, a newsagents, a variety of cafes, coffee shops and restaurants, gift shops, a chandlery, health centre, ATM and Tourist Information Centre.
