Viewforth is a detached, former croft cottage built in 1912. The house overlooks the area where Carloway River flows out into Carloway Loch and is surrounded by green slopes dotted with sheep. On a sunny day or at sunset it is very difficult to drag yourself away from the windows at the front of the house watching the light change the view. The house has a fully enclosed (cocker spaniel proof) back garden and the garden at the front has beautiful views across the loch. You enter the house through a porch at the front with space for outdoor clothes and shoes. The hallway leads to the living room to the left and separate dining room to the right. Both rooms are filled with light and are cosy. The living room has two recliner leather sofas, a tv with free view channels and a range of books and maps for you to use during your stay. The dining room has a large wooden table with seating for six. The kitchen is reached through the living room and runs along the back of the house. It has loads of cupboard space and is well equipped for cooking during your stay. There is a cooker with electric hob, dishwasher, fridge freezer, tumble drier and microwave. The compact bathroom is between the living room and kitchen under the stairs. It has a mains shower and was refurbished summer 2019. Upstairs there is a twin bedded room and a spacious master bedroom with a king size bed. Both bedrooms have large fitted wardrobes with plenty of storage space, enough even for those who don’t like to travel light! The house is heated by oil fired central heating and is very cosy. We have just set up a 4G router to provide WiFi during your stay. The package provides unlimited data. If your stay is during the months between October and April we may ask you to contribute to the cost of the data if you are the only guests staying that month and you require WiFi. If you’re happy to go without that’s fine.
We had a fantastic stay in Hilary's home and it's a place that we would hope to return to again. Hilary is an excellent host who communicates well and is kind and helpful. The house itself is spacious, clean and comfortable, exactly as advertised. We found the location to be ideal with lots to see and do within a short distance as well as getting easy access to the rest of the Lewis and Harris. There is also a friendly, well-stocked community shop only a short walk away, which makes getting any supplies you need during your stay straightforward. Overall, a perfect place to stay.
We had a great time on Lewis and very much enjoyed our stay at the property. It is a nice house, ideal for a couple or a small family. Carloway is really nice place, people are friendly with a great local shop. Scenery and beaches are amazing. Particularly like sitting in the sun room at the front, drink in hand, watching the world go by. Hosts were really responsive and very helpful. All great really!
Had a fab week on the Island, lots of beautiful places to explore 😀 fabulous base, highly recommend, comfortable with everything we needed to make our stay even more memorable. Definitely be back. Thank you Hillary and family
Viewforth is in a rural area of the Isle of Lewis called Carloway. The house is situated close to the road leading to Gearrannan Blackhouse Village. It is a drive of less than 5 minutes and is described as a “living museum” for visitors showing life in a traditional Scottish blackhouse. A less than 15 minute drive will take you to the Callanish Standing Stones. Three routes take you from Carloway to the main town of Stornoway, all of which are very scenic and let you see different parts of the island and all are a drive of about 30-35 minutes. There are two beaches within a 5 minute drive of the house. Dalmore is the closest and biggest. Dalbeg is a wee bit further along the road and it also offers the chance to walk the croft that surrounds the beach. Both beaches are sandy and often have waves rolling in from the Atlantic. They are both signposted on the main road out towards Bragar. Viewforth is in a brilliant position for exploring the whole of the Island because it is well connected by road. Ness in the north of the island is about 25 miles away and the area of Uig is a 30 minute drive away with the reward of a stunning beach at the end. The areas beyond Stornoway are well worth a visit too. Tarbert, the main village in Harris can be easily reached in just over an hour by road and it is a very scenic drive.
Please be aware that getting around the islands without a car could be tricky.
Ideally, to get the best out of your trip, you will need a car.
There is a regular bus service running through Carloway to various parts of the island. Timetables are available online. There are two books in the living room with details of walks on the island along with maps. There are good main roads but lots of single track roads with passing places. If you are enjoying the views at a leisurely pace please pull into passing place to let others past.
