Amazing host with fast responses and a great spot in the city. Thank you for making Paris memorable
Great apartment in a vibrant neighborhood. A few minutes walking is all you need to get to great restaurants, shops and metro stations. We enjoyed every minute of our trip. You can get anywhere in the city within 30 minutes with multiple metro lines near by. It is away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist areas. Having a washing machine for clothes was very handy as all of us packed light.
This was the perfect place to park before our flight home from CDG. The apartment was lovely and quiet but very easy to step outside into a fun, lively neighborhood. I've spent a lot of time in the 11th and it's a fantastic neighborhood. My favorite thing about this place was the cozy bed linen. I slept so well! I would definitely stay again.
We love traveling and appreciate “gotta know” suggestions beforehand, so let us share some info that will add extra “umpf” to your 5-star stay with us in Paris.
Oberkampf is a young, zesty and “bobo” paradise that is safe, trendy, non-gaudy-touristic and chockfull of bars, bistros and boulangeries of all types. The best first day walk is to take a left at our gate (direction of the church and crossing Rue Oberkampf) and just keep walking until you almost reach the end of the Rue Saint Maur. (As a side note, the area to the right from our gate up Rue Saint Maur - direction metro - is less eclectic, older, traditional and quiet (yawn), but a good second-day walk because the general direction of the Bastille ...) Anyway, the more you stroll down Rue Saint Maur (taking a left at our gate) towards the church on Rue Saint Maur, you’ll notice the further you get (about 15 minutes in) the more lively and “international” it gets. This area is good for getting a whole chicken with baked potatoes ... from vociferous and vivacious vendors ... and for appreciating France’s fascinatingly multi-cultural world-power roots. Oberkampf is very safe, and when you hit the bustling pedestrian as bike street (yet minimal car traffic) rue du Faubourg du Temple, you take a left to get to Place de la Republique and a right (up the hills) to get to the Belleville area (a vibrant, slightly seedy China-like town). Belleville, where I love to shop for delicious Chinese groceries, by the way, has a ton of tiny Vietnamese eateries and bakeries all along the rolling hills that serve the best non-fried shrimp rolls on the planet for a song. The cool day and weekend markets are up on Belleville Avenue and it’s a must see.
- Restaurants & Eateries : There are so many - each with its own style and feeling - that it’s difficult to say for sure which eatery is the best, however, the links (below) are possible references. My personal taste is simple, spontaneous & eclectic, so we never rely on Yelp or others’ reviews, but simply drop into any local place and see what happens. Among the bazillion eateries is a very cozy and very tasty Vietnamese restaurant called Chopsticks located a mini-stroll away at #16 Rue des Trois Burnes. Thu-Ha, a young female entrepreneur, makes a to-die-for tapioca and coconut-banana desert! For a quick “feed the troops” bite to eat, The Brigade on Rue Saint Maur and Oberkampf, is near, informal but cheaper and quick. It’s not be upscale enough for a night on the town - but a dandy place for to nurse a hangover without all the ooh-la-la waiter communication hassles. ;-) (Note, also, the half-dozen or so incredibly delicious [it’s the perfect French cheese!] 6-10€ pizza parlors just around the corner from our home on Rue Oberkampf, direction Monoprix & Parmentier metro station.) And then there’s always Café Populaire, a brasserie just on the corner of Rue Saint Maur and Oberkampf about fifteen seconds away from the flat, is always crowded and fun to eat and drink at (on the outside Paris-style terrace) if you want to sit for hours and wine and dine with your friends. The last link below is a slightly upscale beer-food locale (you might already have seen online or read about) is called La Fine Mousse; it’s upscale and a nice place to begin a fun-filled evening escapade with friends.
- Pastries & Groceries : There are pastry shops on each corner, but a well-lit one (blue-signed “Paris Boulangerie,” I believe) is about 200 meters up Rue Saint Maur across Avenue de la Republique (direction metro) and just across from the Lidl grocery. There’s also Monoprix just around the corner from the Parmentier metro station and Franprix (open late and on Sundays) on Rue Saint Maur (about 150 meters in the opposite direction of the metro). When you almost arrive at the church on Rue Saint Maur you’ll get to Aldy, which is a much reasonable version of Monoprix, but clean, dependable and good for a quick fix of whatever daily goods you’re lacking. (Nota bene: Aldy is located 25+ meters inside a pavilion under an apt building and easy to miss; note that it’s next door to a Bio grocery store, which some guests have commented favorably upon, as well.) You’ll see all these groceries (and more) as you get to know the neighborhood and, in my humble opinion, rank like this: Hi-end: Franprix & Monoprix Mid-End: Aldy Low-End: Lidl “Need Wine”: Casino & tiny “Mom & Pops” (literally each corner)
- Pharmacies : Paris has more pharmacies than anywhere I’ve been on the planet. If you drink plenty of lemon water and keep hydrated after all the coffee and wine, you’ll hopefully not be needing a pharmacy. However, if you do, the closest pharmacy (look for the flashing green cross) is on the corner of Oberkampf & Rue Saint Maur, and there are many more all along Rue Saint Maur in the direction of the church.
We really hope this list helps! Lina can also offer you some good insider tidbits of advice regarding what you need, so please don't hesitate to ask many questions to enhance your 5-star stay at our home.
