The house at 6 Kingsland Beach sits pretty, right on the beach in West Mersea, near Colchester - often described as one of Essex’s best kept secrets, a place that’s avoided many of the trappings of modernity and retained a slower pace of life. To reach Mersea island, you must cross the Strood road which floods at high tide, so be mindful of tide times.
Here you may find quiet, tranquil sandy shingle beaches, dunes, palm trees, creeks and broadwalks. The waters are tidal and safe for confident swimmers. Visitors can go crabbing at the jetty, which is an ideal activity for children - make sure to return your catch to their homes!
Mersea is also ideal for watersports such as paddleboarding, kayaking, or windsurfing. It also has it's own vineyard to visit. There are tour boat trips to join to see the coastline from another angle, art and crafts to join in with, live music to listen to, boutique shops as well as nature reserves to explore; and of course all the fresh seafood you can eat!

DRIVING

Tides on Mersea are twice daily. Sometimes they cover the causeway at the Strood, which connects the island to the mainland, cutting it off, so it is important to time crossings for low tides!
Tide heights are affected by the weather and can surprise you. If you absolutely must get across, and the predicted tide height is 4.9m or above, allow about 1 hour either side of the high tide time. Allow an extra 30 mins if it is over 5.5m.
The biggest tides usually happen when high tide is due between about 12pm and 3.30pm. Outside these times you will probably be fine to cross.
Do be careful and remember that sea water is very bad for car engines so it’s better to sit and enjoy the view while you wait.
