It's a great place to go to if you want peace and quiet. Sattal and naukuchiatal are close from here. The manager was very friendly and helpful.

The place is simply awesome. It is located right on top of the hill overlooking the Bhimtal lake. Be prepared for an uphill steep drive to the Magpie Retreat ! It is just a KM, though! Surrounded by lush green forest and with many birds chirping around (Magbie, Treepie, Blue Jay, Paradise Flycatcher, Thrush, Spotted Dove, Plum Headed Parakeet, Grey Headed Canary Flycatcher, etc.) The place is aptly named Magpie Retreat. Certainly carry a good zoom lens and a binocular. One can take strolls around the place. Very serene, calm, peaceful. Ideal location for unwinding. Hosts are very thoughtful. Have taken care of little but important things - Books, Monopoly, Scrabble, Cards, Umbrella, et al. Wonderful caretaker (Mohit). Delicious home made food. In summary, it is worth the vacation and value for money !

I must say that the photos do no justice to the beauty of this place. It was tranquil and one of the best stays I ever had. Though we were not able to meet host but the caretaker was kind enough to pick us up from Bheemtal. The road to the property is itself a roller coaster ride which was fun. Check-in was smooth and rooms were clean. Food was also awesome and as we were traveling with a toddler the caretaker helped us get hot milk whenever needed. The place is a paradise for bird watchers or someone who love to be close to the nature. Overall we had amazing time and many memorable memories to cherish.

This place is in a awesome location only if one can drive through the 1 km steep narrow road . It was scary for us as we checked in night . We had a professional driver hence it was okay but I would not have taken the chance .Though we booked Broad-bill Suite but we were placed in Rose Finch suite which I guess was a kind gesture from the owner . The room was very nicely decorated , clean and had everything one may need to feel like home except warmth of a home as there was none except a local boy who I guess is the care taker when owner is not there . There is a nice balcony in Rose Finch to watch Bhimtal lake in night - which was truly awesome . Expect lot of insects though - we could not sit for long .There was no other guest and we felt like we are the owner . It's a place where you don't expect any shop / food outside . There was no Wi-Fi as mentioned . In fact there was no cook as well - we made our breakfast / tea in the common kitchen & enjoyed in the garden . There is lot of open space for the kids . There was annoying sound of the motor in the night which was disturbing and my kids were scared too - kind of haunted house feel in the night . It wasn't a home stay for us - more like a forest night stay in a rustic hill top village . Virtually you are separated from the plain land once there - no shop / no other food joint . Make sure your food included in the offer else you have to trek up & down - good though for your health . Lot of birds early morning around the property - don't expect though exotic ones . I saw Blue magpie , Whistling Thrush - so the naming of the cottages are worth :-) . I stayed in Rose Finch suite however didn't come across one :-( .

The property: First of all, I must say that the photographs do not do justice to the beauty of the place and the property. It's up on a hill overlooking the entire Bhimtal expanse. Call it a LAKE VIEW, VALLEY VIEW, FOREST VIEW, CLOUD VIEW ....whatever!!! Access is through A steep drive up the hill and right up to the property. I would call it a perfect blend of home stay and a hotel. Well appointed rooms and the personal touch of the hosts. All rooms are valley facing and come with their own balconies to relax. Not to mention two small sit-out gardens to enjoy that perfect weather. It's much away from the hustle bustle of the tourist area and the steep climb to the property along with the sheer beauty of the place ensures that you will not want to go down too often. It is situated on the side of a valley on one side and a village further up leading on to small woods on the other. Be sure to pack your trekking gear or you will repent. While we stayed at the Broadbill room since we were with parents and kids, the best room for couples would have to be the Rosefinch. Simply Elegant. The Hosts: The Parmars welcome you personally and make sure that you have gotten comfortable and keep a check on it while not interfering at all with your privacy. We enjoyed an evening cup of ginger tea with them in their private garden as if we were their personal guests. And we connected on many things common. Whether it was experiences of life, of our pasts, mutual interests etc. Neha (the elder daughter) is a hard core professional wildlife and bird photographer and we could see the reason why. The place is a paradise for bird photography and Neha was very forthcoming in helping novices appreciate the concept as well as the nuances of wildlife and bird photography through her vast assortment of lenses. You are sure to experience a Creative rush just seeing that piece of equipment!!! And if you have time at hand, you could request her to take you to the photography Trek around the property early mornings. Be sure to pack your SLR cameras and whatever lenses you got. You would curse yourself if you only brought your digicams or relied on your cellphones. We cursed ourselves. Mr Parmar was kind enough to show us all the rooms, and have the attendant boy accompany us on our trek. Things to do: Photography Trekking Lazing Discovering yourself Yearning for more holidays Food: While some of the rooms have a small kitchenette for you to cook up basic stuff, but that won't be good for proper meals. You will have to depend on their kitchen or take the unwilling decision to go down to the town each time (remember the steep climb I mentioned) They have a full time cook who makes absolutely yummy home food. At no point...
