Runswick Bay is around a 30-minute walk away, with a gorgeous golden beach. Further to the north you have the inspiring village of Staithes, Saltburn, which is a surfer’s paradise with a Victorian pier and tram, as well as the enormous beach at Redcar. In the south you have Sandsend where the waves dramatically crash over the sea wall at high tide. Whitby, which is bursting with history, draws guests from around the world, as well as the whimsical village of Robin Hood’s Bay, with a tangle of cobbled streets clinging to the cliff edge, with houses spilling right down to the waters edge. Inland, you have the raw natural beauty of the North York Moors National Park, with ancient forests, rolling moorland and breath-taking scenery. Perhaps take the heritage steam train from Whitby on an adventure across the Esk Valley; there are some quaint villages to visit along the way.
